JOB JOB SUMMARY
Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the construction, repair, cleaning, and maintenance of irrigation canals, ditches, pipelines, pumplines, and structures.
DISTINGUISHING
CHARACTERISTICSMaintenance Worker I is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II class by the performance of the more routine maintenance tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Maintenance Worker II is the full journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I by the performance of the full range of maintenance duties including the operation of the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment under general supervision. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Maintenance Worker I class, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience in construction and maintenance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND
EXERCISEDMaintenance Worker IReceives immediate supervision from supervisory and management staff. Maintenance Worker IIReceives general supervision from supervisory and management staff.
Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level maintenance staff.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIESPerform work in the construction, repair, cleaning, and maintenance of irrigation canals, ditches, pipelines, pumplines and structuresPerform general carpentry, electrical, painting, plastering, plumbing, mechanical and other similar major and minor repair, alteration and installation work to District facilities, equipment and buildings.
Operate and maintain construction and gunite-related equipment and hand/power tools such as dump trucks, loader, backhoe, mowers, edgers and blowers. Perform preventive maintenance on construction and gunite-related equipment.
Dig, form, install, maintain, and repair irrigation gates, pipelines, pumplines, concrete structures, and canal lining.
Repair and maintain pumps and pressure systems; oil, lube, clean and repair pumps and related equipment.
Serve as an oiler and relief operator on a variety of equipment as assigned.
Identify plant and animal pests to be controlled; measure, mix, and apply chemicals to trees, shrubs, grass and flowers to control weeds, insects, and plant diseases; set and monitor rodent traps.
Water, mow, weed, trim, aerate, renovate and fertilize lawns; plant, water, fertilize, and maintain landscaped areas including bushes, trees, flowers and shrubs.
Assist in the construction of new substations.
Perform other related duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Necessary Special RequirementsMaintenance Worker I - IIPossession of an appropriate California driver's license.
May be required to obtain and hold a special license (example applicator's certificate) within a reasonable amount of time after date of hire.
While the minimum passing score is 70%, candidates who score highest may be considered for advancement in the recruitment process.
