Job Description

INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED
We currently have 1 opening for an 8-hour, 12-month employee in the Maintenance Department. The work hours for this position are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
BASIC FUNCTION
Under supervision of the Director of Maintenance, Operations, Facilities Development & Technology or designee, to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in the various building trades; and to do other related work as required. Incumbents in this classification provide students, staff, and the public with well-maintained and safe building infrastructure and facilities, which directly supports learning.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, demolition and construction work in the various maintenance trades
  • Assists other maintenance personnel in the construction, demolition, installation, and maintenance of roofs, furniture, fences, playground equipment, cabinets, shelving, chalkboards, and bulletin boards (e.g., repair and replace floor and ceiling tiles, HVAC systems, post-project clean up, etc.)
  • May assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of gas and water lines
  • May assist in the repair and replacement of floor and ceiling tile
  • May assist in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, and cooling systems
  • May assist in the repair of door hardware
  • Loads, unloads, and may drive maintenance service vehicles to and from work sites
  • Prepares surfaces and paints a variety of equipment, furniture, and facility physical structures
  • Participates in various maintenance projects such as moving furniture and equipment, large setups or other activities (e.g., summer moves, new construction set up, special events)
  • May perform custodial and cleanup functions as required
  • Performs other duties related to the class as assigned
JOB REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS
Skills, Knowledge and/or
Abilities Required:
Knowledge of:
  • Common tools, materials, equipment and terminology used in the general maintenance trades (e.g., air gun, skill saw, table saw, impact drill, wrenches, drain snake, tractor, forklift, bobcat, dump truck, etc.
  • Rules, regulations and policies pertaining to the maintenance of school facilities
  • Safe working methods and procedures including work projects around students Ability to:
  • Learn how to use tools and equipment common to the maintenance trades safely, appropriately and effectively
  • Read and work from simple drawings and blueprints
  • Prepare simple reports and records
  • Perform heavy manual activities
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Work courteously and tactfully with co-workers, public and parents
  • Promote team building and a positive work environment
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Experience:
Six (6) months of experience as an unskilled and semi-skilled worker in one or more of the basic maintenance trades and that demonstrates knowledge of use of trade-related tools.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of High School, supplemented by coursework or training in one or more of the various maintenance trades.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT
  • Possession of a valid Class C or higher California Motor Vehicle Operator's License to operate District-assigned vehicle
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier. Must receive two (2) hours of asbestos awareness training within the first 60 days of employment. Federal law requires that employees receive additional asbestos-containing building material (ACBM) training if they work in areas in which asbestos building materials may be disturbed. The District provides this training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Persons performing service in this position classification will be expected to perform heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, ramps and slopes, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods. If someone can do heavy work, it is deemed that he or she can also do medium, light, and sedentary work. (Per the Code of Federal Regulations - Section 404.1567 "Physical Exertion Requirements") Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.

ALL RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE
which will QUALIFY you for this position. Qualified applicants, who meet the minimum qualifications, will participate in a written examination and technical oral interview, which will demonstrate the required knowledge and skill for this classification. The weight percentage of the examination and interview will be 50/50. Those applicants who receive a passing score on the written exam and oral interview will be placed on an Eligibility List. The top three ranks of candidates on the Eligibility List, who are ready, willing and able to accept the position, will be invited to the Final Selection Interview with the hiring authority. The eligibility list will be certified for a period of six months. It will be used to fill current substitute and future permanent openings.

BENEFITS
: Permanent employees will receive paid holidays, sick leave, vacation and longevity benefits per contract or Commission Rules. The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits. Employees working less than full-time, but a minimum of four hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned work hours for major medical insurance benefits. The District does not offer a package of insurance benefits to employees working less than four hours per day. The District provides life insurance for employees who work a minimum of 3 hours. In addition, the District offers a retirement plan which uses joint employee and employer contributions.

VETERAN PREFERENCE
(for entry-level positions only) : Veterans who have been honorably discharged after 30 days or more of service during time of war or national emergency will receive an additional 5 points which will be added to the passing score. Disabled veterans receive 10 points. Any applicant who claims veteran's credit must submit DD Form 214 at the time the employment application is submitted. Failure to submit DD Form 214 at the time of application shall result in no veteran's credits being considered or added to any passing score.
PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT THE FOLLOWING MUST BE COMPLETED
Per Board Policy 4112.4/4212.4/4312.4, the cost of pre-employment examinations shall be paid by the applicant.
Fingerprinting:
Employees will be charged for processing their fingerprints at the time they are hired. The fingerprints are used to complete a confidential background investigation. All candidates with a record of convictions must indicate such on the confidential data form, which is attached to the job application. A record of conviction will not automatically disqualify an applicant from employment, but failure to list all convictions may result in disqualification or dismissal.
Physical Examination:
Newly hired employees must pass a qualifying Medical examination given by a District-appointed physician, which includes testing for illegal controlled substances.
Tuberculosis Exam:
Newly hired employees must submit a Mantoux Skin screening and certificate of completion within the past 60 days that indicates freedom from active tuberculosis. Immigration Reform and Control Act Of 1986: An Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) will be required along with the supporting documents listed on the I-9 form.
