Job Description

The Jacksonville Public Library is seeking a part-time Facilities Helper, reporting to the Manager for Facilities Maintenance. This is service maintenance work in performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, upkeep and repair of Library Facilities. Work requires knowledge of standardized work routines and procedures for minor construction projects, landscape maintenance and ability to operate simple machinery and equipment. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. Work is performed following specific instructions and established routines. Work may be performed outdoors where there are some risks and hazards associated with operating equipment. Physical demands consist of heavy physical exertion and lifting and moving objects weighing 50 pounds or more. Work is performed under immediate supervision where work assignments are well-detailed and well-prescribed by a superior or covered by established procedure and the work is not permitted to deviate from established procedures. Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance, upkeep, and repair of Library facilities. Loads and unloads materials from trucks. Operates machinery and tools such as cordless drill, power saws, shovels, sledgehammers, axes, trowels, blowers, and edgers for exterior maintenance. Performs carpet replacement, repairs and paints walls, relocates and assembles furniture, repairs and installs hardware. Cleans and stores tools and equipment. Hangs items, unpacks deliveries, and uses ladders. Operates motor vehicles to transport materials, supplies, and tools. Maintains appearance of loading dock and work area. Supports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience. Assists with maintaining appearance standards by reporting facilities issues and picking up litter on library grounds. Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies. Performs related work as required. Knowledge of "best practices" and procedures used in the maintenance, upkeep, and repair of public libraries. Knowledge of tools used in landscaping, maintenance, and construction work. Knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations. Ability to operate hand/power tools, simple equipment, and machinery. Ability to replace carpet or ceramic floor tiles. Ability to repair pavers and level uneven pavers. Ability to pressure wash exterior buildings and flat surfaces around buildings. Ability to install and replace ceiling tile. Ability to hang and repair drywall such as taping and finishing, patching, sanding, and priming Ability to paint interior walls and moldings, to include cut in and paint from floor to ceiling Ability to landscape such as pruning, leaf and brush removal. Ability to refinish furniture which includes sanding, staining, and sealing (polyurethane) worn furniture. Ability to work using ladders. Ability to change lock cylinders, dissemble, clean and repair existing locks. Ability to assemble furniture, dis-assemble, and re-assemble furniture/shelves as part of a move. Ability to work independently and with others. Ability to lift and move supplies and materials weighing 50 pounds or more. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, including warning labels and symbols identifying hazardous materials. Ability to operate vehicles. Ability to perform manual labor. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. One year of work experience in general maintenance and/or construction activities. Ability to lift and move objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
