Job Description

Athletic Field Specialist
APPLY HERE
Responsible for the care and condition of athletic fields and community facilities. Performs skilled duties with emphasis on turf management, athletic field maintenance, irrigation, equipment repairs, and indoor facility preparation needs for the community. Works under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Maintains various grounds, athletic fields, and common park areas by performing mowing, dragging, weeding, tilling, raking, digging, and other manual labor tasks 2. Prepares fields for safe athletic activities by maintaining all field areas such as pitching mounds, infield lips, baselines, batting areas, and warning tracks 3. Assists with facility set-up, changes/adjustments, and breakdown of furniture according to rental agreements. 4. Works with recreation staff to prepare sports fields for activities, including but not limited to marking fields, setting bases, pitching mounds, etc. 5. Installs, repairs, and maintains turf on fields, parks, and other common grounds with fertilizer, chemical sprays, and seed 6. Maintains equipment and facilities by performing manual labor and semi-skilled work 7. Ensures the cleanliness of the athletic sports complexes; removes trash, picks litter; sets up picnic and other areas as needed for reservations or programs 8. Repairs and maintains the irrigation system on all sports athletic fields and common ground areas 9. Operates vehicles and performs daily checks on vehicles and safety equipment such as fluid levels, tires, lights, and a walk-around check for damage 10. Performs daily maintenance on mowers and other field equipment; checking fluid levels, changing blades, cleaning air filters, checking tires, checking for damage, and lubricating daily 11. Operates equipment such as front-end loaders, tractors, mowers, rototillers, aerators, drum rollers, etc. 12. Make daily written and oral reports 13. Informs and directs the public in the use of facilities 14. Works together with the Recreation Division on events, programs, and activities as needed 15. Must be available to work in the event of a disaster to assist with recovery response efforts (These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of facilities maintenance and repair functions, custodial cleaning methods 2. Knowledge of landscape and turf maintenance and the operation of turf maintenance equipment 3. Knowledge of tools and equipment necessary to perform related work 4. Knowledge of groundskeeping practices and principles 5. Ability to operate light to medium equipment 6. Skill in the operation and preventative maintenance of mechanical equipment and related tools 7. Knowledge, skill, and ability to perform irrigation system repairs 8. Knowledge of and ability to complete training and maintain certifications in relative commercial applicator licenses, fertilizer and pesticide licenses, and other related programs 9. Knowledge of the maintenance and preparation of recreational athletic fields 10. Knowledge of occupational safety and health hazards and ability to follow prescribed safety precautions 11. Knowledge of the proper mixing and preparation of chemicals according to labels, state and federal laws 12. Ability to perform mathematical calculations required to set up fields according to regulations 13. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions 14. Ability to read and write legibly 15. Ability to work with others and maintain a professional demeanor with the public. 16. Ability to respond and assist in the event of a natural disaster
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. High School Diploma or equivalent 2. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in applicable trade (athletic field and grounds maintenance) training and necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS
1. Valid Florida Driver's License
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
  • Heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying
  • Adequate hearing and vision necessary to safely and accurately perform essential functions (with or without correction)
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs
  • Walking, standing, kneeling, bending, driving, stooping, and operating equipment
ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Works outside in various weather conditions
  • Chemicals (insecticides and herbicides)
