Job Description

Position Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Highway Maintenance Worker to join our team for a temporary assignment , working 40 hours per week at a rate of $15.00 per hour . This position is funded through a disaster recovery grant and is designed to support clean-up and recovery efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Helene . The Highway Maintenance Worker will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective upkeep of highways and roadways , performing a wide range of tasks including repair, cleaning, and general maintenance of highways, bridges, and associated public facilities. All work will be conducted on public property only — no work on private property is permitted under this grant. This role specifically supports disaster recovery operations including: Cleanup and removal of debris from public roads and rights-of-way Basic repair and stabilization of damaged infrastructure Restoration of public spaces affected by the hurricane Assisting with demolition, cleaning, repair, renovation, and reconstruction of public structures and lands located within the disaster area Eligible participants for this position will be processed as temporary employees under the grant by SGRC (Southern Georgia Regional Commission) staff . This is a critical role in supporting community recovery and improving the safety and functionality of the affected public areas following the impact of Hurricane Helene.
Key Responsibilities:
Roadway Maintenance:
Patch and repair potholes and cracks using various materials like asphalt, concrete, or cold patch. Sweep, clear, and remove debris, litter, and other obstructions from roadways and highway shoulders.
Signage and Markings:
Install, replace, and maintain traffic signs, road markers, and other signage.
Stormwater Management:
Maintain drainage systems by clearing culverts, ditches, and drains to prevent water accumulation on roadways. Assist with stormwater management initiatives and report any issues with water flow or flooding.
Bridge Maintenance:
Assist with routine maintenance of bridges, including cleaning, painting, and minor repairs to structures. Report any significant structural issues to supervisory staff for further evaluation.
Traffic Control and Safety:
Set up and maintain traffic control devices, including cones, barricades, and warning signs, for maintenance and construction zones. Work closely with law enforcement and other traffic management personnel to ensure safety for workers and the public.
General Labor:
Assist in the installation and repair of guardrails, fences, and other infrastructure as needed. Perform landscaping tasks such as mowing grass, trimming trees, and controlling vegetation along highways.
