Job Description

This posting is also an internal, promotional opportunity for which current employees are considered first under state law. Starting hourly rate | $22.16 6 Months | $22.51 1 Year | $22.88 The city will provide and pay for Commercial Driver's License training upon hire. Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in the repairing, replacing, maintenance, and heavy construction of related facilities; and performs related work as required. The City of Davenport offers a comprehensive benefit package. The cost for a family plan for medical, dental, vision and prescription is only $98.61 per month for 2026 and starts on first day of employment. The City also offers the following benefits (subject to change): Iowa Public Employee's Retirement Pension plan 457 Deferred Compensation - The City will contribute 6.5% of the employee's income to his/her 457 account if the employee contributes at least 1% (applicable to Teamsters) 13 paid holidays Life Insurance Long Term Disability Insurance Tuition Reimbursement Employee Assistance Program Excavates street cuts and clears rubble using a variety of tools in a variety of jobs and weather conditions; fills and tamps roadways and material around pipes and excavations; sets forms; mixes, pours, and finishes concrete. Repairs, replaces, and constructs public facilities; operates endloader, concrete saw, pumps, and compressors. Completes daily written reports of duties accomplished, including personnel, materials and equipment utilized to complete tasks. Monitors progress of work and equipment, diagnoses various problems with streets; sets up equipment; sets forms and establishes grade for street construction. Operates vans or trucks to and from jobs or transporting material debris and supplies; operates various power tools and types of equipment incidental to work assignments; may operate snow removal or other specialized equipment in emergency situations. Operates a variety of tools in the production of concrete flatwork and curb finishing including streets, sidewalks, and other facilities; responsible for the vehicles, tools, or equipment to perform daily duties; performs maintenance checks (oil, water, tires, etc.) and minor maintenance on assigned vehicles; obeys related traffic laws and regulations. Responds to emergency calls, flood control, storm or snow cleanup, and other related emergencies involving after hours, weekend, and/or holiday work; may be required to be on call during inclement weather and other periods as directed. Follows and ensures that other crew members follow safe working practices, including PPE and others as needed. Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. One year of experience in concrete flatwork or two years of experience in roadway construction maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the required work in this position. Must possess a valid driver's license upon application, obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit (CDLP) within 30 days of appointment and obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements within 90 days of appointment and maintain throughout duration of employment. The city will provide and pay for Commercial Driver's License training upon hire. Must pass a physical examination and background check as prescribed by the City of Davenport. All CDL personnel are subject to Federal Motor Carriers Random Drug & Alcohol Program. Must reside in Iowa or Illinois within two (2) years of hire and maintain residency throughout the duration of employment.
Considerable Knowledge of:
Traffic regulations and safety precautions which apply to the operation of assigned equipment. Materials, methods, and techniques used in the installation, cleaning, maintenance and repair of municipal facilities. Personal safety equipment needed to perform various jobs. Use and care of hand and power tools and equipment. Occupational hazards and proper safety precautions.
Good Knowledge of:
Geography and street locations in the city.
Considerable Skill in:
Working independently and directing others in sequential oral and written instructions. Operation of specialized machinery and tools requiring good spatial perception, attention to performance detail, and manual and physical dexterity. Maintaining written records on vehicles, job sites, and other related matters.
Working Skill in:
Performance of heavy and strenuous manual duties which may require heavy lifting. Continuous standing, extensive digging, and other manual tasks in a variety of environmental conditions. Detecting and reporting equipment malfunctions.
