Job Description

Serves as the primary operator of large digging and loader equipment, with a primary focus on the opening and closing of burial plots. This position performs a wide range of duties related to cemetery operations, including maintenance, landscaping, and construction. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, with interviews scheduled on a rolling basis. The position may close earlier than the posted deadline if a suitable candidate is selected, so applicants are encouraged to submit their applications promptly. Operate heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, and digging machinery for burial plot preparation. Perform specialized maintenance and construction work, including small engine repair. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure equipment safety and functionality. Maintain tools, equipment, and facilities in good working condition; report issues promptly. Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to ensure a safe work environment. Complete landscaping and general cemetery upkeep duties, including mowing, trimming, and snow removal. Assist with setup and breakdown of equipment for graveside services and special events. Communicate effectively with supervisors to prioritize work and resolve issues. Respond to public inquiries with professionalism, empathy, and respect. Collaborate with team members to maintain efficient operations and high-quality service. Participate in continuous improvement efforts and suggest process enhancements. Keep supervisors informed of work progress, supply needs, and operational concerns. High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Clean driving record (no suspensions or revocations for moving violations within the past two years). Ability to pass a background check, physical examination, and drug screening. Must obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License within six (6) months of hire. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
CDL & Training Opportunity:
A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B with air brake endorsement is required for the Maintenance Worker II classification. If you do not currently possess a CDL, the City offers assistance and support to help employees obtain their CDL and advance into the Maintenance Worker II role. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of cemetery and park maintenance equipment (e.g., chain saws, mowers, loaders, tractors, snow blowers). Experience with construction trades such as carpentry and concrete work. Ability to diagnose and repair small engines and perform general equipment maintenance. Understanding of safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency with basic computer applications and mobile devices. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Physical & Working Conditions Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly. Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and operating machinery. Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including exposure to dust, noise, and temperature extremes. Ability to work at heights and on ladders when necessary. Requires manual dexterity and sustained physical effort. Must be available for variable schedules, including evenings, weekends, overtime, and emergency call-outs.
