How You'll Contribute Under close supervision, performs manual work and semi-skilled mechanical tasks to assist in the operation and maintenance of sewer treatment plant facilities, lift stations and collection systems. Assignments may be given in detail or may follow established routine. Limited independence is exercised; work is regularly checked by the supervisor for quality, quantity and safety of operation and care of equipment. Clean tanks, channels, troughs and screens. Perform basic building and grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, painting, washing and snow removal. Gather, prepare and maintain routine operating and technical records. Operate truck for snow removal, salt spreading and material hauling; operate dump truck and end loader to load or unload materials. Collect samples within the City or industrial facilities. Assists with mechanical, plumbing or electrical repairs or maintenance. Other duties may be assigned. Training and Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent; one (1) year experience in operation and maintenance of sewer treatment facilities; experience in performing general manual work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Basic knowledge of the standard practices, techniques, equipment and operation of sewer treatment plant facilities, lift stations and collection systems; basic maintenance and manual work tasks; the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the mechanical trade; and the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions and devices applicable to sewer maintenance work. Skill in effectively communicating with those contacted throughout the course of the workday; maintaining effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and members of the public; and in the safe and proper operation of equipment and hand tools. Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement, or equivalent, required within 45 days after hire. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
