Job Description
Compensation & Benefits:
Expected hiring range $21.21 - $25.50 based on education, experience, and skills. Position Summary Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on district vehicles, equipment, and mechanical systems to support safe and efficient operations. Responsibilities include operating maintenance equipment and tools, maintaining service records, assisting with daily work assignments, supporting snow removal operations, and participating in district safety and training programs. On site presence is required, this is not a remote job. Subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement through Service Employees International Union SEIU Local 73. This position is required to adhere to all Waukegan Park District (District) policies and procedures. Essential Functions Coordinate and perform preventive and service inspections, adjustments, and repair to vehicles and equipment. Operate high-risk equipment such as heavy machinery. Operate trucks, trailers, woodchippers, sod cutters, chainsaw, hand and power tools, and all other maintenance and mechanical equipment. Maintain, review, and analyze records and logs of maintenance practices and inventories. Assist in preparation and execution of daily work assignments and requisitions. Handle hazardous chemicals. Assist with equipment maintenance, upkeep of tools, and work area housekeeping. Prepare and provide recommendations for equipment needs and resolution of safety concerns. Assist with district snow removal operations, including plowing, blowing, shoveling, and salting of walkways and parking lots. Attend pertinent departmental/park district meetings and in-house training sessions. Conduct self in accordance with the policies and procedures as established by the park district. Participate in park district safety and training program to ensure that work performed, and services provided are implemented in a safe manner. Marginal Functions Assist staff in the performance of their duties. Assist staff with completion of work orders and special events. Serve on in-house committees. Attend seminars and training workshops. Perform other duties as Age 18 years and older Education High school diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited mechanics program is desirable. Additional training or education related to duties and responsibilities in mechanics preferred. Experience Minimum three (3) years of mechanic experience required. Knowledge Service and repair small engines (2-stroke), auto, truck, landscape, and large equipment including diesel in a fleet type environment. Specialized repairs (e.g., auto body). Snow removal operations and use of equipment.Ability to:
understand and use basic current computer operating systems and job-related software applications. operate and/or learn to operate tire machine, drive up lift, diagnostic tools, welding torches, forklift, and snow removal equipment. work weekends and holidays as assigned. report to work on emergency repair calls as necessary (evenings, weekends, holidays). operate vehicles and equipment necessary to perform job assignments. communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. take initiative and responsibility. perform duties with minimal supervision. make timely and effective decisions. coordinate and work on mechanical repairs simultaneously. follow-through with assignments. provide good customer service internally to staff and externally to customers and associates.License / Certification
Valid and unrestricted driver's license, not including vision restrictions for corrective lenses. First Aid/CPR/ AED certification required within one (1) year. Mechanic certification preferred. Must have specific vision abilities required for this job: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Psychological Considerations Worker must be able to work: effectively under stress of deadlines and complaints. independently. under supervision and direction of supervisor(s). cooperatively with staff, general public, contractors, vendors, and community groups in a proper manner.Environmental Considerations Worker may be:
in and out of controlled temperatures occasionally throughout the day. required to work in all elements of weather. exposed to elevated noise levels produced from vehicles, landscape maintenance equipment, and/or power tools. at job sites where dust, pollens, molds, etc. may be present. involved in repetitive work (i.e., hand tools and equipment operation). Cognitive Considerations Worker must be able to: train and/or pass on prudent safety and other work-related practices to co-workers. use basic math, reading, and writing skills. follow step-by-step procedures and obtain appropriate end results. exhibit good problem-solving abilities. communicate effectively and respond appropriately to the needs of internal and external contacts. project a positive image and neat appearance to visitors of the park district. Safety Considerations Worker must be able to: follow direction from supervisor with safe and effective follow through. use good safety awareness and judgment. Conditions of Continued Employment All the following are required: provide proof of date of birth. provide a copy of driver's license. provide driver's abstract. submit to a reference check and employment verification. submit to a state criminal background check. submit to a pre-placement physical. submit to pre-placement drug testing. submit to random, reasonable cause, and post-accident alcohol and drug testing. provide verification of education. satisfactorily complete six (12) month introductory period. Residency Employees are strongly encouraged, but not required, to become residents within the boundaries of the Waukegan Park District.
