MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
(CEMETERY) This position starts July 1, 2026 Hourly Range (Effective July 1, 2026) $23.98 - $30.83 per hour Definition Manual work in the operation of light trucks and supporting the construction, reconstruction, repair, and maintenance of various aspects of the cemetery's infrastructure. all other related work, as required. Supervision Works under direct supervision of The Working Foreman Cemetery, or Cemetery Supervisor. Performs functions which are generally well defined. Receives daily assignments and follows departmental rules, regulations and policies; requires the ability to perform operations to complete assigned task, or tasks, according to a prescribed time schedule; refers unusual problems to superiors. Work Environment Most work is performed outside, with frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal exposure to unpleasant working conditions related to outdoor and/or maintenance functions, such as loud noises, near moving mechanical parts or exposure to fumes or airborne particles. May be required to respond to weather-related emergencies. The employee operates a light truck, snow plowing equipment, and a variety of hand and power tools, including brooms, shovels, rakes, and other tools. The employee has limited contact with other town departments and the general public. Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, damage to buildings or equipment and monetary loss. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Operates light trucks to transport materials, tools, supplies and equipment and personnel to work sites; hauls materials to work sites. Assists with excavation and preparation of earth graves and cremation graves; Uses hand and power tools to dig, grade and prepare graves for burial or grass seeding; Removes snow from areas as directed using hand and/or power equipment; Removes seasonal grave decorations and disposes of the materials as directed. Straightens grave markers, dresses winter graves and fills in grave sink holes as directed. May assist as needed with snow plowing the cemetery roads during snow and ice events. Assists other workers, such as craftsmen and tradespeople in the performance of their duties; may clean facilities, and load and unload vehicles. Inspects tools and equipment and reviews work practices and operating procedures to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety codes and standards, and keeps work area and equipment and tools clean, neat, orderly safe and secure. Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates. Recommended Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience High school diploma; experience doing manual labor in support of typical cemetery functions; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional Requirements Valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license Class D Knowledge, Ability and Skill Some knowledge of cemetery construction, repair and maintenance operations. Ability to drive light trucks and other equipment. Demonstrated ability to properly and safely operate and maintain power and hand tools. Ability to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to interact in an effective manner with fellow employees and supervisors. Skill in operating light trucks and necessary tools and equipment. Physical Requirements Strenuous physical effort is generally required to perform duties. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, sit, speak and hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, and climb. Stamina is required to work in adverse weather conditions. Required to work in confined spaces and lift or move items weighing up to 100 pounds. Physical ability to use power and hand tools; may operate and drive light trucks and use construction and maintenance equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to operate a motor vehicle and use equipment safely.
