Job Description

The Operations and Maintenance Division within the Public Service Department is seeking skilled individuals to join their crew of Maintenance Workers .This position allows individuals to contribute their skills and abilities by performing maintenance both safely and properly for the overall improvement of City streets and roadways. If you enjoy working outdoors and accomplishing tasks with a dynamic crew, this could be the position for you. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Working on a paving crew to place non-compacted asphalt in proper location with a shovel and then racking the material with a lute Grading sub-base for installation of pavement sidewalks, curbs, gutters, grade surfaces ad setting concrete forms for pavement, sidewalks, curbs and gutters Visually checks form work to ensure that the forms meet line and grade requirements Placing and finishing concrete into the forms using rakes, shovels, derbies, come-alongs and other concrete tools for the proper and finishing of concrete Driving various trucks and operating snow plows and road salting equipment Operating heavy power assisting tools Driving dump-truck and other related vehicles to deliver supplies, tools, parts and other material Driving bobcat, fork lift and other equipment and serving as a crew person on an asphalt paving machine Performing landscaping operations such as restoring lawns and parkways after construction is completed or damaged by motorist Conducting safety checks and minor repair and maintenance on vehicles and equipment Performing various street repairs using concrete, asphalt, sealant and pavement preservation materials Setting up traffic control devises including cones and barricades Ideal candidates will possess the following: High School Diploma or GED One (1) year of experience performing asphalt work that includes work with a lute; or an equivalent combination of training and experience; OR One (1) year of experience performing sewer maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience; OR One (1) year of experience performing road and street maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Special Requirements:
Minimum possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License, Group B, with Air Brakes and N (tank) Endorsements to be given consideration. Group A license must be acquired after employment and within one hundred twenty (120) days of employment. This position requires the operation of a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or more. Therefore, pursuant to Section 601a of the Michigan Vehicle Code, the applicant recommended for this position must be able to pass the physical examination mandated by the State of Michigan in order to be transferred or hired for this position .
Post-Hire Requirements:
Must complete and pass the Solid Waste Training Program (Trash, recycling, and yard waste) within 45 days of employment. MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training provided as a part of the training program. Must complete Traffic Regulator Training and Certification as provided bi-annually by the Public Service O & M Division. Must complete and maintain Power and Industrial Truck Training and Certification provided every three (years) by the Public Service O & M Division May require overtime or shift work for snow and ice control or other emergencies
