Full-Time Position Summary The Gaming and Technology Academy of Saginaw (GATA) is seeking a Custodian / Maintenance Worker to join its founding team for the Fall 2026 school opening. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, healthy, and fully operational learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. The Custodian / Maintenance Worker performs routine custodial duties, preventative maintenance, minor repairs, groundskeeping, and building systems monitoring to ensure the school facility remains in excellent condition. The successful candidate will possess strong maintenance skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to providing a safe and welcoming educational environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Facility Operations and Safety Conduct daily inspections of school facilities to ensure safe operating conditions. Immediately identify, address, and report any condition that could pose a risk to students, staff, or visitors. Notify the Principal or designated administrator no later than 5:45 a.m. of any building issue that could affect school operations. Maintain building environmental systems and monitor facility conditions throughout the day. Remain available during unscheduled work periods for building emergencies and maintenance issues. Custodial Services Vacuum carpets, sweep floors, mop surfaces, dust furniture, and perform general cleaning duties. Empty trash containers and ensure proper waste disposal procedures are followed. Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, common areas, and other school facilities. Monitor cafeteria areas during lunch periods and after-school activities, removing trash and cleaning spills as needed. Operate floor maintenance and polishing equipment. Maintain cleanliness and appearance standards throughout the facility. Building Maintenance Replace light bulbs, soap dispensers, paper products, and other facility supplies. Perform minor repairs to:
Furniture Plumbing fixtures Electrical fixtures Building equipment Maintain and monitor heating and cooling systems. Perform minor repairs necessary to maintain proper building temperatures and environmental controls. Monitor HVAC systems during school operations and extended breaks to prevent overheating or freezing conditions. Ensure all building systems remain operational and safe. Inventory and Supply Management Conduct daily inventories of custodial supplies and paper products. Initiate supply orders with sufficient lead time to prevent shortages. Maintain organized storage areas and inventory records. Ensure restrooms are fully stocked with: Toilet paper Paper towels Soap Other necessary supplies Grounds Maintenance Perform light groundskeeping duties, including: Mowing grass Raking leaves Sweeping sidewalks and entrances Removing debris Assisting with snow and ice removal Maintain safe access to building entrances and walkways. Monitor school grounds for safety concerns and maintenance needs. General Support Inspect stairways, hallways, and common areas throughout the day for spills, debris, or other hazards. Correct unsafe conditions immediately whenever possible. Assist with facility setup and support for school events and activities. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal or designated administrator. Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of two (2) years of building maintenance experience. Experience with electrical, heating, cooling, and general repair work. Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and workplace safety procedures. Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment safely and effectively. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple responsibilities. Commitment to maintaining a safe and professional educational environment. Physical and Environmental Requirements Frequent standing and walking throughout the building and school grounds. Ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, bend, and perform physical labor as needed. Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to forty (40) pounds. Ability to utilize sight, hearing, smell, and touch effectively while performing assigned duties. Ability to perform basic computer tasks and data entry functions. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
