Job Description
Building Mechanic Hattiesburg - Hattiesburg, MS 39401 Apply Apply Description Job Summary Responsible for inspecting equipment, planning and laying out jobs related to structural building or repair projects. Work requires drawing sketches, making time and material estimates, requisitioning needed materials, and may include performance of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work. The work is subject to inspection during progress and to a final inspection upon completion by the Facilities Director or another administrative superior. Perform weekly stand-by/on-call duties for campus emergency call backs and requests for maintenance assistance as required. Assist with general building maintenance. Works with Events Crew. Duties and Responsibilities This job description does not state or imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position. Duties and responsibilities listed are essential job functions and exclude functions which are incidental to the performance of fundamental job duties. Assist the university in implementing the statement of purpose. Assist the university in implementing the long-range institutional plan. Plans and participates in varied phases of construction and repair including such work as: Facility remodeling, installing and repairing plumbing; replacing doors, windows and siding; building cement forms; building and replacing concrete sidewalks, foundations and floors; repairing roofs and installing new roofing; repairing broken windows and installing new windows; painting interior and exterior walls and other surfaces; building and repairing stone and brick walls and floors; and such sheet metal work as replacing and repairing guttering and drain spouts. Participates in routine maintenance electrical work; participates in minor electrical work with appropriate training and education. Plans and lays out work and keeps a record of amounts of materials used. Performs other related work as assigned. Must be able to perform duties in an on-campus setting. Qualifications Required Qualifications Six or more years of skilled work in building and plant maintenance including experience in the building, electrical, or mechanical trades. (Post-secondary training in an accredited vocational-training school in one of the building, mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.) Valid Mississippi driver license, OSHA Fork Lift operator's certificate. Preferred Qualifications High School diploma desirable. Physical Demands Heavy physical labor with constant standing and walking for extended periods of time; walking over rough or uneven surfaces; frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; frequent bending, kneeling and stooping; climb and descend ladders, manual dexterity required to operate power equipment safely; ability to understand and follow verbal and/or written directions; ability to operate vehicles, including electric carts to carry, pick-up or deliver supplies to various work areas and/or campus locations. Ability to properly and continuously wear OSHA, ANSI, and WCU designated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
WORKING CONDITIONS
Both indoor and Outdoor during all weather conditions including rain and extreme heat; exposure to sun for extended periods of time; work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces; work while using or wearing safety equipment such as respirators, protective gloves, protective toed footwear, face shields and goggles, spray and rain suits; exposure to dust, oil/grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, smoke and pollen, and/or hazardous materials such as pesticides, herbicides, solvents and other toxic chemicals or fumes; exposure to loud noise levels from equipment and vehicle operation; must work with and around dangerous equipment and machinery with moving parts; work assignments may be scheduled at any campus location(s), day and/or evenings and weekends as needed to conduct campus activities. Adheres to WCU and departmental dress code; appearance is neat, clean and professional, properly wears WCU designated Facilities Staff uniform daily. Attends Chapel, official University events, and athletic (home) games in support of University sanctioned activities.
