Job Summary An employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and occasionally skilled labor tasks in theconstruction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines and appurtenances. Work involves operating a variety oftools and light, medium, and heavy equipment to build, repair and replace sections of water and sewer lines. Work mayinvolve responsibility for maintaining and repairing variety of pumps and motors and other equipment includingelectrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and some electronic (SCADA) work. Position may be subject to being on-call on ascheduled rotation and called in for emergencies. Duties Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs parts or equipment due to failure; performs mechanical, plumbing, electrical,and electronic maintenance and repairs. Rebuilds and overhauls defective parts and machinery, instrumentation and equipment; maintains and serviceselectrical generators for emergency power sources during outages; dismantles and overhauls various equipment;cleans, replaces and repairs gauges, engines, and other equipment. Trouble shoots hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, HVAC, conveyor, inverter, and programmable logic control (PLC)systems; changes PLC modules, replaces parts, operates laptop computer for diagnostics. Maintains and repairs pumps, motors, and hydraulic systems, and other equipment. Helps with new equipmentinstallations as needed Plans and participates in regular preventive maintenance inspections such as inspecting wastewater and waterpumping stations; checking and lubricating bearings and gear boxes; checking and replacing filters; cleaning outwet wells; packing pumps; and other preventive maintenance activities. Performs repairs on air compressors and blower systems, water mixers and gear drives, belt presses, and relatedsystems. Lays water and sewer pipelines; repairs and replaces sewer and/or water lines and related facilities. Uses hand tools i.e. shovels to finish grading trenches for construction of water and sewer lines; fits pipe; and usesvariety of hand tools; may operate the backhoe occasionally. Participates in hydrant and valve exercising and maintenance programs; locates existing lines and valves to updatemaps or mark for other contractors; assists high-pressure testing of lines and calculating proper chlorination;disconnects wells. Employer City of Brevard Department Public Works Address 232 Cashiers Valley Rd Brevard, North Carolina, 28712 Operates varied equipment i.e. Sewer-Jet/Vac truck, backhoe, front-end loader, dump trucks, jackhammers,tampers, fork-lift, track hoe, aerial lift, Kubato tractor, pip threading machines, tapping, various gas pumps andsaws machines, trenchers, air compressors, and boring machines, etc. Operates sewer rudder machine to unstop sewer lines with pressurized hoses; also uses rakes, and shovels. Participates in ground, lawn, and facility maintenance. Maintains records of work activities. Performs related duties as required. Qualifications Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in electrical, mechanical and/or plumbing trades, andconsiderable mechanical maintenance and repair experience including pump, electrical and electronic repairs andwastewater laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement:
Possess, or be able to obtain, a valid CDL North Carolina driver's license within 6 months of hire date.
Pay:
$20.93 - $25.00 per hour
