Job Description

The City of Graham is seeking a dependable, hardworking individual to join our Public Works team as a General Maintenance Worker I in the Property Maintenance Division. General Statement of Duties Under immediate supervision, performs semi-skilled manual labor tasks in various divisions of the public works department. An employee in this class works as a member of a maintenance crew led by a supervisor or crew leader. This employee uses hand tools and power tools and manual labor to perform tasks, which include grounds keeping and street maintenance work. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of supervisor in the division assigned. Work is reviewed for ability to follow directions, complete assigned tasks in a safe and timely manner, and clean-up of work area and quality of work.

Positions in this classification are not exempt from the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Illustrative Examples of Work Performs grounds keeping activities by removing debris, digging, grading, backfilling, seeding, cutting and removing trees, planting, transplanting, and watering. Operates zero-turn mower, weed-eater, blowers, hand tools, sprayers, rakes, shovels, and other minor tools and equipment associated with work assigned. Assists in minor repairs of streets, sidewalks, driveways, and gutters by pouring and shoveling asphalt, tamping, and smoothing. Assists in concrete work by pouring and forming. Works in aerial lifts trimming trees and installing and removing lights. Loads, transports, and unloads daily materials, supplies, and equipment. Performs heavy manual labor, often in unfavorable weather conditions. Assists in cleanup of assigned job site. Collects garbage from public facilities. Assists leaf collection crew with leaf pick-up. Performs minor maintenance on motorized equipment. Performs duties of Sanitation Collector as assigned. Other related duties as assigned. Knowledge of and dedication to general safety procedures; commitment to using PPE. Ability to read tape measure/grade rod and do basic math. Ability to use tablet and work order program. Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the work assigned. Ability to operate tools and equipment used in the work assigned. Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and public. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Work in this position is heavy work (exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, to extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, proximity to moving mechanical parts, atmospheric conditions, oils, close quarters and other areas which could cause claustrophobia, and exposure to potentially infectious bodily fluids. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license equivalent to the required North Carolina license classification and recognized for operation in North Carolina. Highschool diploma or GED required.
