https://www.dot.nm.gov/employee-perks-program/ Why does the job exist? This position operates heavy-duty equipment used to maintain/upgrade US and New Mexico highways and inspect roadways. The position also implements measures for highway maintenance and repair using approved maintenance and construction methods. How does it get done? Operates medium to heavy duty equipment, utilizing hand and power tools. Performs operator level maintenance on equipment and tools. This position operates a single axle dump truck, large or small front-end loaders, pull type tractors. Operates self-propelled brooms and rollers. Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties required in the patrol. Snow removal and emergency operations (call outs). Removal of trash and dead animals from right of way. Who are the customers? The traveling public and pedestrians. Ideal Candidate The traveling public and pedestrians. Minimum Qualification One (1) year of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loaders, five (5) and ten (10) yard dump trucks, self-propelled brooms, rollers, or mowers. Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (or equivalent licenses from another state) upon hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker, and/or Hazmat endorsement. Employment Requirements This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License, and must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License at time of hire. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better. Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow. May include exposure to:
Sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants, and infected trash. Moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; Temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations. High speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; Falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; Standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather (including snow removal), accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.
