DEFINITION
Under immediate supervision, performs routine manual labor and routine ground and facility maintenance tasks within the Athletics Parks Division and performs related duties as required within the Parks Division of the Department of Athletics & Leisure Services..
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished as being the "entry-level" in the Parks Division series and is responsible for routine maintenance repair, and care of grounds, buildings and facilities.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Serve as a good representative of the City of Mesquite, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public. Maintains lawns, shrubbery, and trees including planting, watering, trimming, mowing, edging, fertilizing, and weed and pest control; operates trucks, mowers, and other light equipment; prepares and maintains ball fields. Prepares areas for planting by clearing, grading, fertilizing, and watering ground; prepares areas for rock-beds and lays rock. Installation, operations and maintenance, and repairs of in-ground sprinkler systems. Provides custodial services for parks and facilities, including cleaning and repairing floors, restrooms, and removal of trash, litter and graffiti. Prepares surfaces for painting; applies paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, or other protective finishes to various surfaces. Pours concrete; performs preventative maintenance; assists other Parks staff as necessary; interacts with the public; maintains and enforces park rules. Operates tractor and attachments (medium sized loaders, rototiller, post hole digger), power movers, blowers, sweepers, edgers, hedge trimmers, clippers, sprayers, and other equipment or vehicles; makes minor repairs such as sharpening blades; performs routine maintenance and equipment safety inspection. Performs other duties as may be required. Maintenance on Cemetery, parks, athletic fields, Mesquite Sports & Event Complex (MSEC), medians, Travel Center, Museum, City Hall, Building Department and Justice Facility and other City facilities. .Perform preventative maintenance and, assists other Parks staff as necessary; interacts with the public; maintains and enforces park rules. Assist in the preparation, construction and maintenance of park fixtures and facilities. Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements at all times. Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations. Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION WORKING CONDITIONS
: Work is performed under the following conditions: This is a field classification involving working outdoors where incumbents are exposed to extreme heat or cold without effective protection from weather, subject to extreme heat; heavy traffic, vibrations and loud noises. Work includes exposure to hazardous materials, solvents, and chemicals associated with parks and facilities maintenance and repair, and heavy dust associated with excavation of structures and sites.
Physical Requirements:
Vision sufficient to read diagrams, manuals, rules, regulations, laws, plans. Hearing sufficient to hear conversations in person, over the telephone, and radios. Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in person, over the telephone and radios. Dexterity sufficient to operate manual and power tools, used in the course of work. Mobility sufficient to safely stand, walk, kneel, crouch, bend, twist, stretch, crawl, pull, lift, grasp, and reach to lift, and enter and exit truck and to operate motor vehicles. Strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing 25 to 100 pounds and endurance sufficient to sit and stand for extended periods and maintain efficiency through the entire work shift.
Job Hazard/Risk Factors :
Employees risk physical hazard from mechanical and electrical equipment, exposure to human debris, drug paraphernalia, heavy equipment, working in and around lawn mowers and grounds equipment, hazardous gases, fumes, paint, chemicals, pesticides and walking and working on slippery and uneven surfaces.. Employees frequently work in close quarters, narrow aisles, passageways and crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. Position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to drug testing.
