Job Description

Position Summary:
The maintenance worker / Handyman is responsible for the oversight and maintenance of all agency buildings which includes housekeeping, custodial needs, performing and coordinating tasks related to the upkeep, use and repair of agency facilities, building(s), grounds, fixtures and related equipment. They perform tasks related to agency on-and off-site events. They must ensure all work is performed to an appropriate quality level and that it complies with agency policies, safety, standards and legal requirements. Candidate is expected to work during the weekday (M-F) anytime between 8am-5pm for a total of up to 20 hours a week (flexible schedule)
Responsibilities:
  • Identify and perform any routine maintenance tasks and make repairs that arise in a timely fashion.
  • Perform routine tasks such as painting, moving office equipment (e.g., includes heavy lifting of boxes, files, file cabinets, office furniture; and climbing stairs) within and between all branch offices and offsite locations.
  • Transport items such as furniture/equipment/supplies when needed.
  • Basic setup of office equipment and supplies.
  • Assemble products as needed.
  • Request and coordinate the services of crafts/trade personnel, administrators and contractors as necessary.
  • Coordinate projects with administrators and contractors as needed.
  • Assure all waste, recycling and debris are picked up and removed from building(s) and collection of garbage minimizes animal nuisance issues (i.e., rodents, raccoons).
  • Ensure security, fire, and electrical systems are maintained and monitored.
  • Conduct fire drills and check emergency lights according to schedules.
  • Ensure that all work/danger areas are locked to avoid unwanted access.
  • Be available for annual inspections by building inspectors, fire marshals, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect and ensure quality control of all work performed by outside vendors.
  • Perform building service or grounds related tasks required for routine cleaning, construction and/or clearing of roads/walkways, and other work of a general maintenance nature; including light snow removal on walkways.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all agency vehicles (e.g. inspections, oil changes, gas fills, etc.)
  • Manage janitorial and housekeeping functions and order supplies as needed.
  • Perform other special projects and additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalency required. Vocational certification preferred. Must have a minimum of at least 1-2 years' experience and/or training and knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, layouts, painting, custodial, automotive, grounds and management skills. Must possess fundamental proficiency with basic computer skills (ex: emails, saving documents, using applications, searching the internet).
Knowledge and skills required:
Solid organizational and follow-up skills Basic computer literacy of IT systems, applications and software - (specifically Microsoft office) Possess good communication and interpersonal skills Ability to manage and work with a variety of different people Basic writing skills Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people Ability to find creative solutions Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather Ability to maintain composure under pressure
  • Adherence to all personnel practices with respect to attendance, punctuality and time off.
  • Ability to work flexible hours if needed (e.g., agency fundraising events, times of emergency, response to fire and burglar alarm calls, etc.)
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver's license
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
