This job posting is for a Provisional position and will create a new list. The hiring department will conduct a preliminary review of your application to determine who to interview. Under general supervision, is responsible for performing routine and general landscape, playground, and grounds maintenance; performs related duties as required. Provisional Appointment •Currently there is not an active tested eligible list for this classification, therefore, this position will be filled on a PROVISIONAL
basis. At such time an examination is given for this position, within two years of hire, the preferred candidate serving in the position provisionally will be required to take the examination. The preferred candidate at that time must pass the exam to continue employment in this position. •Examples of Work:
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) Operates straight trucks, hydraulic lift bed dump trucks, and trucks with single and double axle trailers attached; hauls supplies, equipment, plant material, topsoil, gravel, and other materials; Performs daily checks of equipment fluid levels, belts, and general operating condition of equipment being used and completes daily check list for any trucks being used; Loads and unloads trucks with supplies, equipment, plant material, topsoil, gravel, and other materials required; Shovels snow from and/or applies salt or ice-melt to sidewalks, walkways, parking lots, and other surfaces to ensure safe passage by pedestrians on Columbus City Schools property; operates vehicles with snow plows, spreaders, and other attachments as needed for snow and ice removal; Starts, operates, and feeds plant materials into brush chipper; Grades and levels surfaces to conform with existing grade or in accordance with site plan; Straightens, repairs, removes, and replaces damaged fence posts, top rails, and fence gates, augers holes, and sets new fence posts; Prepares lawns and athletic fields for seeding and sodding as needed; aerates, seeds or lays new sod using hand tools; performs grading and mechanical seeding using aerating attachments on tractors; Prepares existing and new planting beds by cleaning out, cultivating, edging, spreading topsoil and mulch, and planting flowers and shrubbery in accordance with landscape plan; Mows and trims lawn areas and athletic field grass using push mowers, small riding mowers, power trimmers, and full-sized tractors with gang mower or brush hog decks attached; drives full-sized tractors on the street from job site to job site; Dumps, spreads, and grades gravel on unpaved parking areas, driveways, and walkways; dumps and spreads mulch under play equipment; Removes tree stumps using stump grinder, front-end loader, and hand tools; Cleans, adjusts, and sharpens chains; makes minor repairs to broken chainsaws and makes other minor equipment repairs; Sharpens brush hog blades; greases mowing decks; makes minor repairs to mowing tractors, 3-point hitches, sway bars, and other landscaping and grounds keeping equipment;
Assists in the construction, assembly, and/or maintenance of playgrounds and play areas. Minimum Qualifications:
Two (2) years of experience performing landscaping or grounds keeping work. Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver's license must be obtained by completion of the probationary period. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the principles, practices, and acceptable work methods of landscape and grounds maintenance; general knowledge of tools and equipment used to perform landscaping and grounds keeping tasks; general knowledge of safety precautions to be followed when working with landscaping tools and equipment; ability to operate a computer and related software; ability to work outside in a variety of temperatures and weather types; ability to follow supervisory instructions; ability to perform a complete range of physical movements; ability to operate and maneuver commercial vehicles with and without trailers being hauled, a truck with manual or automatic transmission, and maneuver a truck with heavy single and double center axle trailers attached; ability to operate various types of motorized equipment related to landscaping and grounds keeping tasks; ability to perform heavy lifting and a variety of strenuous manual tasks; ability to climb and work from ladders.
