Job Description

Environmental Advocate (Facilities & Sustainability Support) Reports to:
Team Lead/Director of Administration Location:
The Domestic Violence Shelter Status:
Part-Time | non-exempt
Organizational Overview:
The Domestic Violence Shelter's Mission is to build a peaceful community by providing safety, education, and supportive services while empowering survivors and those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. The Shelter will provide programs to educate the community about the effects of violence on families and individuals to empower them to help reduce and prevent family violence in our community.
Position Overview:
The Environmental Advocate plays a hands-on role in supporting the organization's facilities and sustainability goals through direct action in facility (both indoors and outdoors) upkeep, repair, cleaning, and space reorganization. This position combines environmental stewardship with practical support to ensure that workspaces and community areas are safe, clean, and aligned with eco-conscious practices. Key Roles Facilities Maintenance & Repair Perform basic repairs (e.g., furniture, fixtures, minor wall repair) Identify and report larger maintenance issues Assist with setup and breakdown for events and programs Perform routine outdoor upkeep, including lawn care Cleaning & Sanitation Maintain cleanliness of all shared and private spaces, including offices, restrooms, and outdoor areas Follow established cleaning protocols to ensure a safe, sanitary environment Use environmentally responsible cleaning products when possible Ensure proper waste and recycling disposal Environmental Stewardship Promote sustainable practices such as recycling, waste reduction, and energy conservation Support initiatives like composting, upcycling, and eco-conscious purchasing Space Organization & Support (Initiated after core cleaning responsibilities are consistently met) Reorganize storage, offices, and shared spaces for efficiency and accessibility Assist with moving and arranging furniture Maintain organized inventory systems and labeling Collaboration & Support Work collaboratively with staff to support facility and program needs Participate in team meetings and contribute to facility planning efforts Perform other duties as assigned by leadership Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Experience in maintenance, custodial work, or environmental services preferred Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, and repair techniques Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and perform physical tasks Strong attention to detail and organizational skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Commitment to confidentiality, safety, and respectful communication Additional Requirements Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed Ability to work in a trauma-informed environment Cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse populations Reliability, punctuality, and consistent task completion Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment
