Airport Building Custodial Maintenance Worker (Evening hours 3:30pm to 11:30pm M-F and rotates weekends with Airport Maintenance staff)

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for performing the custodial maintenance of the municipal airport.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cleans, sanitizes, and details restrooms; refills dispensers; stocks supplies. Dusts, polishes, and wipes furniture and fixtures. Clean windows and mirrors. Cleans and disinfects water fountains and tables. Changes lightbulbs. Sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors; strips, cleans, waxes and buffs floors. Empties and cleans trash receptacles. Cleans spills and broken glass. Secures building; locks windows and doors. Perform building and grounds maintenance duties. Reports maintenance needs to supervisor. Performs airfield inspections to ensure compliance with federal regulations. Inspects navigational aids, airfield lighting, signage, rotating beacon, and lighted wind-socks. Monitors runway, taxiway, and apron conditions to ensure safe landing, take off, and taxi conditions. Issues Notices to Airmen to keep pilots updated on airfield conditions ( will train in this area ). Participates in snow and ice control duties in compliance with FAA approved Snow and Ice Control Plan. Responsible for security and oversight of the facilities to include monitoring and observation of trespassing, theft, or other criminal activity and reporting it at the time of observation. Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of safe work practices. Skill in decision-making and problem solving. Skill in communicating with others. Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures. Knowledge of the use of various cleaning chemicals. Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance principles. Skill in operating such cleaning equipment as a vacuum cleaner. Skill in following instructions. Skill in prioritizing work. Knowledge of FAA rules and regulations ( will train in this area ). Knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods used in the custodial maintenance of a public building. Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and light repair of a variety of custodial equipment.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Airport Operations and Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include relevant federal regulations, safe work practices, and airport and city policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related custodial and maintenance duties. The variety of systems to be maintained and the necessity of working around the public contributes to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to perform custodial maintenance of the municipal airport. Success in this position contributes to the provision of a safe, clean, attractive, and well-maintained facility for the public.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with co-workers and other city employees, contractors, tenants, vendors, and members of the public. Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in the municipal airport, an office, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of GED and two years of related custodial maintenance work experience. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
RESIDENCY
All new hires must reside within 40 miles of city limits unless specific approval of City Manager.
