Job Description

Position Summary:
Performs a variety of unskilled and skilled labor tasks, either working as part of a crew, such as for mowing or park maintenance, or may work alone or with other laborers, performing miscellaneous clean-up or repair activities. Performs various tasks to maintain parks and grounds. Maintains city public areas, including city parks, pool, athletic fields, and rights-of-way. This is a skilled and semi-skilled position responsible for the daily and routine maintenance of city parks, athletic facilities, municipal grounds, municipal recreation facilities/buildings, and the urban forest. The work consists of operating a variety of equipment such as a pick-up truck, 1-Ton dump truck, utility tractor with attachments and/or 3-point hitch implements, and commercial mowers. The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. Repairs, paints, and may assist in the construction of park facilities and buildings Collects brush and debris and disposes of it properly Cleans and maintains park grounds Mows and uses a weed-eater on parks, right of ways, and other city properties Responsible for driving vehicles and equipment over the highway from site to site Assists in maintaining a clean and safe working environment Assists with special events and activities Promotes a positive image in performing community services (community meetings, problem-solving resources, etc.) Performs all assigned duties and tasks with the highest regard for highest quality customer service Conducts periodic reviews related to assigned areas of responsibility Performs periodic inspections of issued and non-issued equipment to ensure that it is in good working order Provides effective control and coordination of resources and activities within the section to which assigned Coordinates activities with peers, coworkers, and other departmental personnel to ensure consistency in interpretation, adherence, and implementation of Administrative Orders, City Ordinances, departmental, personnel, and safety policies, procedures, and laws Provides effective control and coordination of resources and activities within the department, unit, or section to which assigned Routinely performs inspections of operational functions to identify inefficient or ineffective processes and provides solutions Develops own knowledge, skills, and abilities to enhance and ensure continued success and meets all mandated training requirements Performs other related duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Skill to operate light equipment such as weed-eaters, lawn mowers, zero-turns, and other equipment, and chainsaws safely. Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment Ability to understand and follow instructions Operate, and/or ability to learn to operate, standard maintenance equipment Ability to lift 100 lbs. Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, and/or wet weather Understands and displays behaviors consistent with servant leadership To perform the essential functions of the job, must have good hand-eye coordination to operate equipment (vehicles, maintenance equipment, office equipment, handheld devices etc.); endure extended periods of exertion and sit for long periods of time; follow verbal and written directives; communicate courteously and effectively with other people; must exercise good judgment and make competent decisions; must be able to maintain confidentiality with public information, vendor confidentiality, and personnel matters Is responsible for encouraging and facilitating a harmonious working environment; therefore, the following interpersonal and personal characteristics are expected: Displays enthusiasm for the job, which includes attendance, performance, and conduct; Ability to work effectively and cohesively with others; Displays courteous, respectful, and polite demeanor towards co-workers and members of the public; and, Recognizes the importance of being a team member who creates a positive working environment
Required:
High School Diploma or GED Valid Texas Class C Driver's License - driving record must be in compliance with City policy Must pass a pre-employment background, drug screen & physical May be required to work flexible hours, work during emergency conditions, and may require a call-back status (in cases of emergencies)
Preferred:
At least one (1) year of experience in a related field Familiarity with manual labor, landscaping tools, and equipment
