Job Description

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs various semi-skilled maintenance and unskilled labor work related to the City of Waxahachie's parks/cemetery/sports complex, or other related areas. Performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Perform other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry through journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II and Senior Maintenance Worker classifications by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, with no supervisory responsibility. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction, assistance, or supervision as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class. Participate in the repair and maintenance of city parks, cemetery, and sports complex, including operating various equipment in the completion of assigned tasks. Perform various tasks related to the maintenance and repair of city parks including mowing, weed eating, plant trees and other plants; repair irrigation systems; pick up trash and clean bathrooms. Maintains ball fields by mowing, tilling, leveling and striping. Performs duties during special events to ensure area is clean and supplied for participants. Operate various light equipment including mowers, edgers, tiller, pickup truck, chainsaw, and other equipment as needed. Maintain and make minor repair to assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment; report major repair needs. Show cemetery plots to potential customers, locate, and mark graves. Assist other departments during special events with set-up, cleaning, and traffic control. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures. Respond to public inquiries courteously; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience:
High School diploma or GED equivalent. One year of general maintenance experience.
Licenses and Certificates:
A valid State driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by the City of Waxahachie is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
Operations, services, and activities of a maintenance program. Methods and techniques of maintenance equipment operation. Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes, and regulations. Basic principles and procedures of record keeping. Operations, services, and activities of the city. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Operational characteristics of various maintenance equipment and tools. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
Operate a variety of maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner. Perform heavy manual labor. Work outdoors and in inclement weather conditions. Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear. Manual dexterity to use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; perform repetitive movements of hands or wrists; operate a motor vehicle. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds unaided. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Mental Demands While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information and documents; analyzes and solves problems; uses math and mathematical reasoning; performs highly detailed work; deals with multiple concurrent tasks; and interacts with others encountered in the course of work, including frequent contact with customers and/or the public and dissatisfied/abusive individuals.
Work Environment:
Field environment, exposure to inclement weather conditions; noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases; potentially hazardous equipment.
