Department Recreation Opening Date 05/21/2026 Closing Date Continuous Description Benefits Description Performs skilled trades work maintaining the cleanliness of parks, marking and preparing ball fields, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under limited supervision. Examples of Duties Operates non-CDL dump trucks, chainsaw, weed eater, etc. in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park facilities. Clears sidewalks and parking lots of snow, litter, overgrown grass, and brush. Performs minor repairs and maintenance to assigned equipment. Mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats, trims trees and shrubs; sprays pesticides, spreads fertilizer; assists with landscape installation and preforms related landscaping duties in the maintenance of City grounds. Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance and operation of parks. Sets up for various events; sets up tents, tables and chairs, puts up and removes decorations and barricades; cleans up and restores area after events. Picksup refuse, trash, limbs, leaves, etc., and transports to appropriate facilities from park spaces. Checksforsafetyofplaygroundandpark equipment. Prepares athletic fields; mows, fertilizes, and rakes fields; lays out fields, aligns bases, stripes field, etc. Uses a variety of handheld and motorized tools and equipment such as chainsaws, blowers, hedge clippers, etc. Cleans and maintains assigned restrooms. Performs general maintenance work such as painting, installing and/or repairing picnic tables, swings, slides, water fountains, bench boards, bleachers, and other park equipment. Performs various ground maintenance duties such as grass seeding, horticulture work, snow removal, or work related with special events. May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.
Typical Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the performance of general maintenance, grounds keeping, parks maintenance work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Playground Maintenance Course - preferred
Knowledge:
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment. Knowledge of regulations governing equipment operation. Knowledge of parks drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures. General knowledge of plant identification, maintenance schedules, chemical applications and grounds maintenance equipment. Knowledge of ground maintenance techniques and equipment.
Skills:
Skill in the operation of equipment to which assigned. Effective communication skills. Ground maintenance skills.
Abilities:
Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions. Ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustment to equipment. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Supplemental Information Work Environment:
Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme noise, extreme temperatures, odors, heights, or dust and to potentially dangerous and hazardous equipment or materials.

Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.
