at State of Vermont in Montpelier, Vermont, United States Job Description Overview The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. Additionally, this position may assist in vehicle and equipment maintenance. Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 13, 2025 are eligible. Please contact the hiring manager listed below for the full details of this program. Although the full salary range for this position is provided, new hires are typically made at the salary range minimum. As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 20 will be $23.75 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $36.88 per hour. Environmental Factors Duties require the ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule/ area and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and debris from roadside litter are present. May be exposed to blood or airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on roads with moving traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.
