The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Rest Area Attendant position that performs janitorial services, facility maintenance, and landscaping activities at our Safety Rest Areas. Reporting to the Auburn Maintenance Facility, this Highway Maintenance Worker 1 position plays an important role in providing clean, functional, and well-maintained facilities for the traveling public. This work supports the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout Washington State by helping reduce driver fatigue and providing designated locations for travelers and commercial vehicles to stop and inspect loads and equipment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to safety, customer service, teamwork, and environmental stewardship while performing a variety of maintenance and custodial duties in a fast-paced environment. Strong candidates will also be able to work independently, follow established procedures, and maintain attention to detail. What to Expect This position performs physical work both outdoors and inside rest area buildings. Duties may include working in inclement weather, on uneven terrain, at ground level or in elevated positions, and in confined spaces. Alternate and emergency shifts may be required, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will: Perform janitorial services to maintain clean, sanitary, and safe rest areas, including cleaning surfaces, removing graffiti, refilling supplies, and collecting litter and trash. Manage vegetation and landscaping within rest areas and right-of-way areas through mowing, pruning, weeding, planting, and applying fertilizers and pesticides in compliance with environmental requirements. Clean, inspect, and maintain RV dump stations and water systems, including chlorination, water meter readings, and drinking water sampling. Conduct daily inspections for hazards, vandalism, abandoned vehicles, and unauthorized use, and maintain safe access during adverse weather conditions. Operate hand and power tools, motor vehicles, and equipment safely while documenting work activities, inventory, and timesheets in computerized systems. Perform routine and preventative maintenance on facilities and equipment, including minor plumbing, electrical, lighting, HVAC, and roadway repairs. Provide customer service by assisting travelers with directions, travel information, road conditions, and rest area rules, and responding to emergencies as needed. Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
Facilities Maintenance & Trade Skills:
Experience performing basic maintenance tasks, simple repairs, and physical work in a related setting.

In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required: A valid driver's license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles. The ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within six (6) months of hire. The ability to obtain a Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License within twelve (12) months of hire. The ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/ CPR Certification. The ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call. Ability and willingness to work varying shifts, including weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. Ability to work in all weather conditions and ability to traverse uneven terrain. Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:
Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance Experience:
Experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing.
Facilities Maintenance and Janitorial Repair Experience:
Experience performing minor repair and maintenance of public buildings to include janitorial duties and plumbing/electrical systems.
Cleaning Agents and Chemical Use Knowledge :
Knowledge of a variety of cleaning agents and how to mix for effective cleaning.
Technology Skills:
Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and Outlook; and tablets, such as an iPad. Important Notes This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. This position is not eligible for remote work. The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional 10% assignment pay is included in the posted salary. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code. Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis.
