Summary:
The job of Journeyman
  • Grounds Maintenance is done for the purpose/s ensuring grounds maintenance assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists other personnel and trades as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities; Cleans landscaped areas and related items of litter, overgrown plant material, etc. (e.g. storm drains, etc.) for the purpose of preventing flooding and removing hazards; Coordinates with site, administration and athletic coaches for the purpose of adjusting irrigation schedules, field preparation, etc.; Plants various landscaping materials (e.g. lawns, shrubbery, flowers, etc.) for the purpose of keeping the areas attractive and for protection against erosion; Prepares documentation (e.g. written and electronic) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information; Prepares grounds and athletic fields (e.g. assemblies, graduation, ball fields, courtyards, flower beds, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate, attractive and safe areas for assemblies, athletic events, recreational use, and other activities; Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety or security concerns and performs repairs as necessary; Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, landscaping materials, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site; Designs, installs, evaluates, repairs, and operates irrigation systems as necessary for the purpose of maintaining all grounds in a safe, healthy, and attractive condition; Operates heavy equipment (e.g. tractors, mowers, backhoes, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining district facilities and systems; Applies pesticides (e.g. herbicides, fungicides, insecticides) for the purpose of maintaining landscaped areas; Provides snow removal and sanding services for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment around district facilities.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
The environmental factors described here are representative of those that may be present in the workplace while the employee performs the essential functions of the job. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: significant lifting, ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs., carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 50% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes, some hazardous conditions, and in varying atmospheric conditions.
Education and Experience:
High School graduate or equivalent; Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desire; Targeted job-related education that meets the District's prerequisite requirements.
Expertise:
Expertise to perform multiple technical tasks.
Required Testing:
As needed to comply with required licenses/certifications.
Clearances:
Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Background Clearance.
Certificates & Licenses:
Valid Washington State Driver's License required (must be able to fulfill all traveling requirements of this position, including possessing and maintaining a valid license and automobile insurance, when using a personal vehicle for District business); Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement (or ability to obtain within 90-days of employment); Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License (or ability to obtain within 90-days of employment).
Continuing Education/Training:
Must maintain license/certification required for positions as noted in the job description. Sexual Harassment Training (or ability to obtain within 90-days of employment) Safety Training (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment) First Aid/CPR Certification (or ability to obtain within 90-days of employment)
