SHOP FOREMAN JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE
Shop Foreman
SUPERVISES
Mechanics and other assigned personnel.
JOB GOAL
1. To enable each student, through safe and efficient transportation, to take full advantage of curricular and extracurricular activities offered by the school system. 2. To keep the school system's vehicles in such a state of operating excellence so as to prevent interruptions to the educational programs offered by the Board.

QUALIFICATIONS
Possesses a high school diploma or equivalent. A demonstrated knowledge of automotive/diesel maintenance and preventive care. Possesses valid
CDL, DOT
Health Certificate or Alabama School Bus Driver Physical Examination Report and Alabama School Bus Certificate. Not less than 5 years successful experience in vehicle maintenance. Must obtain Alabama School Bus Mechanic Certification (within 6 months of hire). Must maintain a personal and job related driving record that meets the insurance carrier's criteria for liability insurance for the Phenix City Board of Education. Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to: Takes an active role in solving problems occurring on school buses. Assists in developing recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based on a survey of resident students, distance and grade levels. Conforms with all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation. Attends appropriate committee and staff meetings. Supervises the diagnosing, assigning, and repairing of system-owned vehicles. Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment in keeping with the system's inventory control guidelines, track all part warranties, receipts and insurance of parts and supplies. Implements all federal guidelines, state regulations, and Board policies as related to school bus operation making sure that all buses in the Phenix City School System follow these regulations. Inspect, test and road check equipment to determine the nature of defects and failures, and as a review of the work of mechanics and helpers to whom repair and maintenance jobs were assigned. Assist Transportation Supervisor in determining the most economical way to repair equipment. Perform functions of a mechanic and related work as required. Requisition repair parts, fuel lubricant, supplies, and equipment required in the maintenance and garage operation. Practices and promotes high standards of safety, cleanliness and efficiency in all work areas. Maintains records and makes reports as appropriate. Communicates with Transportation Supervisor on a daily basis regarding work schedules, safety issues, repairs, out of service vehicles/buses, etc. Maintain confidentiality of all school system related business. Be regular and punctual in attendance. Perform duties in a manner that promotes good public relations. Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or Superintendent.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to pass state skill test, state written test, department of transportation physical and MDE Basic Training Program. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Continuously required to sit and occasionally walk or stand. Will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. Frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motions many times. Frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools. Continuously driving on the job. Must occasionally lift and/or more up to 50 pounds such as bus parts and chemical containers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 and will occasionally walk on slippery surfaces. Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. Regularly works near moving mechanical bus and equipment. May frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products. Degreasers, gases, fumes and sprays. Occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles. Has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve months. Other contract terms and salary to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
