E03 Position Summary This position will lead a dedicated team in maintaining and enhancing the beauty, safety, and functionality of campus outdoor spaces. This role blends hands-on expertise with leadership—overseeing daily landscaping operations, coordinating seasonal projects, event preparation and ensuring that every lawn, garden, pathway, and recreational area reflects high campus standards.
MAJOR DUTIES
Oversees the daily activities of grounds personnel and contractors. Directs turf maintenance, irrigation, and landscape maintenance operations. Directs greenhouse operations. Inspects plant materials, trees, shrubs and indoor plants for insect and other infestations and responds accordingly. Contributes to and directs new landscape construction jobs; researches appropriate plant species. Coordinates and implements ice and snow removal operations. Inspects all exterior areas for life safety issues. Assists in preparations for special events. Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines personnel. Works as a team member and is supportive to the other supervisor positions within the Physical Plant. Works to develop and maintain a campus landscape master plan. Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of grounds maintenance and management principles and practices. Knowledge of grounds equipment operation, maintenance and repair principles. Knowledge of irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair principles. Knowledge of greenhouse management principles. Knowledge of landscape design principles. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority. Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs. Skill in the operation of snow removal equipment. Skill in decision making and problem solving. Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Senior Director of the Physical Plant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the New Mexico Department of Agriculture pesticide laws and regulations, the employee handbook, and college policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of varied supervisory and grounds maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to supervise the maintenance of campus grounds. Success in this position contributes to the provision of a safe and well-maintained environment for college operations.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Grounds Maintenance Crew-leader (1), Grounds Maintenance Workers, and other seasonal personnel and student workers
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Possession of or ability to obtain a Pesticide Commercial/Non-Commercial Applicator License within 6 months. The following
