Job Description

Expected Starting Salary:
$123,064- $145,847 The City of Des Plaines Public Works & Engineering Department is seeking a Utility Services Superintendent to lead and support a wide range of operations that keep the City running efficiently. This role provides supervisory and administrative direction across multiple divisions, including water and sewer systems, pumping facilities, street maintenance, snow and ice control, forestry, fleet, and facilities and grounds. Division assignments may shift based on departmental needs. If you're a hands-on leader with a passion for public service, we want you on our team.
Responsibilities:
Oversee Operations:
Manage daily activities across assigned divisions by setting priorities, evaluating work, and coordinating service delivery. •
Lead and Supervise Staff:
Oversee foremen and staff directly or through supervisors, conduct evaluations, and promote a strong culture of safety and accountability. •
Support Service Delivery:
Respond to requests, estimate costs, order materials, and ensure efficient day-to-day operations. •
Budgeting & Planning:
Track labor, equipment, and material costs; assist with budgets and long-term planning. •
Projects & Emergency Response:
Oversee municipal projects and support emergency operations, including water/sewer issues and snow events. •
Compliance & Reporting:
Assist with regulatory reporting (USEPA, IEPA, IDNR, State Fire Marshal) and ensure adherence to codes and standards.
Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred. •
Experience:
7 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, construction, or maintenance, including at least 3 years in a supervisory capacity. •
Skills:
Knowledge of municipal infrastructure systems; ability to read plans and operate related software (Word, Excel, GIS). •
Licenses:
State of Illinois Class "B" CDL with Airbrake and Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within 120 days. Class "C" Public Water Supply Operator's License or ability to obtain within 12 months, Arborist Certification, Collection System Operator, or Facility Manager are preferred. Why Des Plaines? Salary Range:
$123,064 - $168,629 (Depending on Qualifications) Please note that, unless exceptional qualifications or experience beyond the minimum requirements are present, the City of Des Plaines typically hires at the starting rate of the range.
