Job Summary:
The Buildings & Grounds Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, upkeep, and directing the custodial, maintenance, and repair of all Grosse Ile Township Schools facilities, athletic fields and grounds. Measures the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance and custodial staff, making changes to work loads and systems as necessary; coordinates all safety issues and training within the district; oversees the proper functioning of the various systems within the physical facilities of the district; designs and implements energy saving programs throughout the district; helps plan and oversee the bidding process of district projects (including development of bid specifications); helps develop budgets for capital outlay projects and other assignments as directed.
Job Qualifications:
Required:
    Education:
    High school diploma and at least five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others, demonstrate self-discipline and initiative, follow state and district guidelines.
    • Must possess organizational and technology skills, be detail oriented, have a strong teamwork ethic and excellent communication skills
    • Knowledge of safe work practices
    Valid Michigan Driver's License Preferred:
    • Journeyman or Master Tradesperson and/or Licensed Contractor
    • Prior supervisory experience
    • Associate degree
    • Prior experience working in a school setting
    • Knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
    Job Responsibilities:
    • Provides leadership and supervision of custodial, maintenance, and grounds staff; develops and schedules work processes and provides the tools and equipment necessary to complete tasks; monitors work performance and standards ensuring quality, timeliness and compliance with safety standards; participates in the hiring process, mentoring, professional development and employee performance evaluations.
    Hold monthly staff meetings to ensure clear communication, alignment on priorities, and timely resolution of custodial and maintenance issues.
    • Assists with establishing and adherence to departmental policies and work procedures; familiarizes staff with current and updated GITS policies, ensuring they are observed; sets expectations and priorities to help staff achieve and maintain work schedules and standards; makes necessary adjustments to work practices and standards based on field observation and best practices.
    • Develops and implements strategies for the successful maintenance, renovation and repair of all grounds and athletic fields; works closely with athletics department to ensure quality playing surfaces are ready for scheduled sporting events; assists with the set up and programming of smart irrigation timer schedules to maintain healthy turf and landscape areas while preventing water waste; manages turf and ground care chemical and seed procurement and application.
    • Surveys GITS infrastructure, equipment and control systems for functionality and adequacy; maintains a safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing environment; assess vehicle and equipment readiness, reliability, and safety; identifies deficiencies and and takes corrective action to resolve potential issues or needed repairs; adheres to applicable district requirements, building codes, insurance stipulations and OSHA requirements.
    • Coordinates all inspections, services and repairs performed internally and externally; reviews all reports, estimates and invoices ensuring accuracy and adherence to industry standards and code requirements; takes timely action to correct deficiencies and makes record updates; keep staff informed out of commission building systems, infrastructure and equipment; routinely oversees and participates with staff and trade partners to improve personal knowledge and skills.
    • Manages all inventory, maintenance and repair activities using the district's maintenance management system; assigns preventative and corrective maintenance work orders, monitors progress, and ensures required data entered when completed; maintains and tracks inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment.
    • Reviews plans and specifications for new construction, remodeling and repairs; assesses project suitability and completeness, and makes appropriate change recommendations; determines project scope, necessary equipment and materials, and required manpower; provides leadership with progress reports; oversees project work quality and completion schedule adherence with contractors and vendors.
    • Assists with procurement of contracted services, materials and equipment; assists with scope of work development, equipment and material specifications and work schedules; participates in walk-throughs, construction meetings and performs project superintendent duties as needed
    • Responds to emergency calls, tasking and work orders, as assigned by leadership
    • Perform other regular duties as assigned
    Pay:
    $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
