Job Description

Class Description The Lapeer County Road Commission is seeking an experienced Director of Maintenance working out of the Lapeer Office. This position works under the general direction of the Managing Director. Examples of Work The Director of Maintenance supervises the work of the Road Commission; directs the daily maintenance and construction activities on county and state roads and bridges; oversees maintenance of the Commission's equipment, facilities and grounds; participates in budget preparations and labor negotiations; prepares reports and makes recommendations to the Managing Director; acts on behalf of the Managing Director in their absence.
Key Responsibilities:
Coordinate and oversee fleet and assist in selection and purchase of equipment, parts and materials with Working Shop Foremen. Direct Supervisor to all Foremen and oversees the general assignment of work crews by planning road maintenance and construction activities with other Supervisors in the Road Commission. Inspects completed and in-progress field work; assesses future organization work needs. Collaborates with the Safety Coordinator for safety trainings and oversees Foremen with job site safety. Contracts and administers private sector maintenance and construction agreements; provides reporting on maintenance activities, road conditions and equipment status. Undertakes legal and technical review to determine effective and efficient operations activities; adjusts operations efforts to ensure same. Assists in developing policies for Commission consideration; develops and implements procedures to carry out Commission policies. Knowledge and Skills Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Business or Public Administration. Prior related experience may be substituted. Seven (7) years experience in road maintenance and/or construction. Three (3) years supervisory experience. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with members of the public, local officials, and employees at all levels. Ability to prepare and maintain records, correspondence and analytical reports. Maintain a valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Will be subject to random DOT drug/alcohol testing as required by state or federal law. Certifications in Soil Erosion and Sediment Control and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) inspection standards.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and manipulate tools, equipment, supplies, and other objects often weighing upwards to 100 pound.
Ability to maneuver in, under and over vehicles and equipment.
