About the Role The Lead Maintenance Technician ensures a safe, functional, and clean school environment for students and staff. This role combines hands-on technical work with oversight of the maintenance team, transportation team, and outside contractors. Reporting to the Director of Facilities and Transportation, the Lead Maintenance Technician is a full-time, non-exempt position. The Lead Maintenance Technician will be scheduled to work Monday - Friday from 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM and may be required to work nights, weekends, emergency call-ins, and overtime as needed. The behind-the-scenes work that makes extraordinary student experiences possible. What You'll Do Perform complex repairs across plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and groundskeeping systems. Operate machinery for snow removal, including snow blowers, plow-equipped trucks and utility vehicles. Operate and maintain specialized power tools (e.g., scrubbers, buffers, extractors, pressure washers, vacuums) to maintain high-standard interior finishes. Oversee fleet operations including working with the transportation team and vendors. Manage inventory and labor tracking. Read and interpret blueprints, general safety/operating instructions, electrical schematics, etc. Secure multi-building facilities including locking and unlocking doors and windows and reporting unauthorized occupants. Manage the logistics of school events, including furniture resets and technical setup for various groups. Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools as needed. Ensure strict compliance with all safety and code requirements of the Federal, State and local municipalities; support and enforce all school policies and rules, safety regulations and guidelines. Lead team in the Director's absence, or by direction, providing clear operational instructions to the team. What We're Looking For The ideal candidate brings a proven track record in facility maintenance paired with exceptional interpersonal skills. You should be a problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and possesses the technical acumen to oversee HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and groundskeeping. If you are a skilled leader who takes pride in building the foundation for others to succeed, we want to hear from you. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. Skilled trades experience with applicable licensing and certifications. At least 5 years of experience as a maintenance technician and at least 2 years in a lead maintenance technician role. Experience in a school environment is preferred. Possess and maintain a valid State CDL B license; a good driving record is required. Demonstrated mastery in troubleshooting and repairing electrical, plumbing, construction, carpentry and heating and cooling systems. Demonstrated knowledge of all relevant federal, state, county and city regulations. Ability to read and understand procedures, instructions, safety rules and technical documents Possess a sound knowledge in supply mediums (electricity, heating, cooling) including a comprehensive understanding of energy management. Knowledge of standard custodial practices, equipment and supplies. Thorough knowledge of maintenance methods, procedures, practices, tools and equipment. Ability to plan and execute preventative maintenance measures. Must be a self-starter, able to work independently, and under minimum supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with administration, peers, staff, teachers and parents. Proven problem solving and time management skills; ability to consistently meet deadlines and be punctual. Ability to use computerized maintenance systems and Microsoft Office products. Strong interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal); able to communicate information clearly and in a timely fashion. Critical thinking abilities required; ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions. Willing to complete required Archdiocese of Detroit training. Willing to submit to drug testing, fingerprinting and a criminal background check. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor environment in a variety of temperatures and inclement conditions with physical activity involved, including extensive walking, climbing vertical ladders and stairs, lifting and carrying weighted items. Consistently stands for long periods and on occasion may be required to sit to perform duties. Continuously uses hand strength to grasp, operate, move, and control tools, equipment, and supplies. Frequently bends or twists at the neck and torso to perform duties. Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds to move supplies and equipment; occasionally lifts/moves up to 100 pounds. Frequently squats, bends, stoops, kneels, reaches or crouches. Frequently pushes/pulls objects such as bleachers, tables, and equipment. Occasionally balances and ascends/descends ladders up to 16 feet. Occasionally operates aerial lift platforms with working heights up to 26 feet. Regularly exchanges verbal and written information accurately with supervisors, team members, staff and parents. Regularly uses vision to perceive detail at close range and at a distance; to identify colors, adjust focus, perceive depth, and maintain peripheral awareness.
