Job Description

PositionTitle:
Head Mechanic Job Summary:
Responsible for maintaining a safe, reliable, and economical fleet of transportation vehicles in a cost‑effective and efficient manner within a
SRESD-SATA
garage partnership. The Head Mechanic oversees garage operations, supervises assistant mechanics, ensures compliance with state and federal vehicle safety regulations, and maintains positive working relationships with transportation staff. The Head Mechanic reports directly to the SRESD Transportation Supervisor and works under the general direction and evaluation of the Transportation Supervisor and Superintendent. The SRESD Transportation Supervisor and SATA Executive Director will provide guidance on issues related to their respective vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one.
  • Master Heavy Duty State Certification or ASE Master Certification.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate assistant mechanics.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with drivers and staff.
  • Computer skills preferred including maintenance record systems.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Head Mechanic provides direct supervision and work direction to Assistant Mechanics and other garage personnel, including:
  • Assigning daily work and repair priorities
  • Monitoring quality and completion of mechanical work
  • Providing technical guidance and support
  • Ensuring safe work practices within the garage
  • Assisting with training and development of mechanics
  • Coordinating workflow to ensure fleet readiness and reliability
Responsibilities, Duties, and Functions:
  • Establish and monitor maintenance schedules for SRESD and SATA vehicles.
  • Establish work schedules and repair priorities for garage personnel.
  • Supervise assistant mechanics and coordinate garage workflow.
  • Oversee maintenance of parts inventory and purchasing within budget constraints.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and equipment and recommend purchases.
  • Provide advisement on bus replacement and vehicle selection as requested.
  • Provide input into budget development for garage operations.
  • Maintain required maintenance and repair records.
  • Provide or coordinate emergency road service for buses as required.
  • Provide maintenance and repairs for SRESD and SATA buses, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Diagnose and determine the proper repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensure all fleet vehicles meet state and federal safety standards.
  • Work cooperatively with the Michigan State Police inspector during the annual RESD bus inspection process.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Maintain work area in clean and safe condition.
  • Operate SATA and SRESD-owned vehicles in accordance with laws and established policies.
  • Maintain positive and professional working relationships with transportation drivers and staff.
  • Utilize computer systems to maintain maintenance records and parts inventory.
  • Use effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Perform other incidental tasks consistent with the goals of the position.
  • Assist with snow removal when necessary.
  • Perform incidental building maintenance when required.
  • Assist with maintaining and repairing SRESD vehicles including grounds and snow removal equipment.
Physical and Work Requirements:
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation including working in a garage environment, lifting equipment, standing, bending, kneeling, and operating mechanical tools and vehicles.
Terms:
Monday
  • Friday Work Schedule, Work year is 52 weeks, 40 hours per week.
The schedule is flexible to meet the needs of Transportation operations including inclement weather or emergency transportation needs.
Wage range:
$69,051.42
  • $83,253.
