Job Description

Assistant Planner - Planning Department The Spring Lake Township Planning Department seeks a qualified candidate for a full-time Assistant Planner position. Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with required evening meetings. This is an administrative support position under the general supervision of the Community Development Director. This individual performs a variety of administrative support functions for the Department and is expected to provide a positive first impression to visitors and callers to the Department.
Primary responsibilities include the following:
  • Answering calls to the Department, responding to general email inquiries, and meeting with residents and customers at the counter, all in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Attending public meetings and taking minutes, specifically for the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and others as needed.
  • Accepting, reviewing, and processing various planning and zoning applications.
  • Preparing and maintaining department documents such as permit applications, planning and zoning forms, and related information.
  • Maintaining all department files.
  • Assisting other departments as needed, including Township Manger, Assessing and Clerk's office.
Candidates are required to have a minimum of one year of relevant experience, preferably in municipal planning or local government. This individual will need to work independently, be well organized and complete work accurately on a timely basis in an environment with frequent interruptions. A working knowledge of common office software is required. Preferred candidates will have strong technical writing skills and a related college degree.
