Job Description

Job Summary:
Under general supervision, performs day to day administrative and maintenance duties of the City's Cemetery and other City Buildings and Lands as assigned.
Representative Duties/Essential Functions:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position. Other job functions may be added from time to time. Performs maintenance of the cemetery grounds; mows the lawn; trims trees; performs plantings; fills graves; performs general clean-up. Prepares grave and columbarium sites; performs burials at conclusion of ceremonies. Interacts with individuals, families, contractors and other support businesses; sells burial lots; provides assistance in the location of grave sites; responds to various questions. Performs various Lead Worker duties; maintains maps and cemetery records; handles payments for burials, lots and associated expenses; provides input into the cemetery operating budget, works with veteran services and other service groups. Proficient communicating with email, use of iPad, PC (MS Word & Excel), Data entry in to City GIS Mapping. Recommends the hiring of seasonal workers; provides work scheduling and oversight of seasonal employees. Operates equipment for snow and ice removal and/or for hauling materials or other items. Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, excavator, dump truck, plow, skid loader. Performs routine maintenance and repair on small to medium duty motorized equipment. Works with all other city crews on various projects. Occasional overtime is required with little notice to perform services and emergency weather callouts. Responsible for a dedicated plow route in winter months. Obtain and maintain Special Engineers Boilers License to be able to perform walk around daily inspections of city buildings heating systems. (training provided) Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent Two years of experience in building and grounds maintenance. Two years of verifiable experience operating heavy duty equipment. Possession of a valid State of Minnesota class B commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain said license within 6 months of initial hire. Knowledge of City policies and procedures. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform moderately heavy manual labor under various weather conditions. Ability to communicate effectively; orally, in writing and/or email. Ability to establish effective working relationships with the public and support businesses. Ability to provide effective work direction to seasonal workers. Ability to perform basic bookkeeping duties and data entry. Skill in the operation of various motorized equipment. Skill in the operation and use of various hand and power tools. Skill in the maintenance and repair of small motorized equipment and related items.
Other Preferred Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of cemetery operations and administrative procedures. Knowledge of HVAC and related systems. Welding/Cutting/Fabrication/Repair, Diesel/Small Engine Mechanics. Ability to work in/around the public, contractors, vendors, volunteers, groups. Ability to communicate effectively and provide work direction to others.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Ability to work alone and outside in various weather conditions. Performs winter maintenance, including snow and ice removal. Required to lift and/or carry supplies, materials, equipment and/or items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Pay Scale:
This is a Class I of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) position with a pay rate of $36.04 per hour upon completion of 120 working shifts of a probationary period. The first 120 shifts worked are paid at 90% of pay scale.
