Job Summary The Mechanic Instructor is a professional role responsible for developing and delivering maintenance training to ensure that BSD has qualified maintenance personnel. This role maintains current knowledge of maintenance practices to meet departmental training needs; researches and assists with standard operating procedures, job tasks, and technical bulletins for maintenance; and provides technical support to all bus maintenance employees. Job Responsibilities Provides expert advice and technical problem-solving to the maintenance community in a timely and cost-effective manner. Participates in selecting qualified candidates for maintenance technician positions through the interview process. Designs, develops, plans, and delivers maintenance-related training courses that provide required skills for new-hire mechanics, current mechanics, and supervisors. Reviews and evaluates training programs to identify needed changes and incorporate new technology, practices, and standards. Conducts classroom and hands-on bus maintenance training to equip new-hire mechanics, current mechanics, and supervisors with required skills. Supports fleet operations by conducting Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training and testing for mechanics to ensure they meet qualification requirements. Performs administrative duties by maintaining accurate training records, student files, and lesson plan files documenting course content and participation. Provides technical support and evaluates new maintenance products, practices, and technologies for potential implementation. Identifies and develops union Mechanic Instructor Assistants to support training delivery and on-the-job instruction. Assists with mechanic recruiting by providing facility tours and participating in trade school job fairs and related outreach activities. Assists with written reports, including standard operating procedures, technical bulletins, and accident or failure analyses. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Extensive knowledge of bus operating systems, maintenance policies and procedures, adult learning concepts, training design and evaluation principles, CDL laws and regulations, and structured problem-solving methods. Experience in troubleshooting bus operating systems, diagnosing root causes of mechanical and electronic failures, and using diagnostic software. Ability to recognize when training techniques need to be adjusted and adapt instructional methods to meet the needs of diverse learners. Strong logical thinking skills with the ability to address problems quickly and effectively, and to translate complex mechanical and electrical system concepts into clear, understandable training for all personnel. Ability to read and interpret diagnostic equipment outputs and technical manuals, and to collaborate with a team to design training aligned with defined learning objectives. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for preparing training materials, documentation, and reports. Work Environment Office, classroom, and shop settings within bus garages and maintenance facilities. Regular presence in active maintenance bays, yards, and around buses and equipment. Exposure to noise, grease, and varying temperatures when working in shops or on vehicles. Routine use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (e.g., safety glasses, safety footwear, hearing protection, high-visibility garments) in maintenance areas. Frequent use of computers, projectors, diagnostic tools, and training aids for classroom and hands-on instruction. Regular interaction with mechanics, supervisors, vendors, and other training or maintenance staff. Physical Abilities Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while preparing materials, using a computer, or delivering classroom training. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during shop demonstrations, hands-on training, and facility walkthroughs. Ability to climb bus steps, ladders, and platforms, and access under-vehicle inspection areas. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to demonstrate and inspect components in tight or low spaces.
