Job Description

Performs intermediate skilled trades work supervising and participating in the work of a crew engaged in various construction, maintenance and repair projects, and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the appropriate superintendent and/or senior crew supervisor. Full supervision is exercised over assigned crew members. Supervises and participates in the work of unskilled and semiskilled workers in the repair, maintenance or construction of streets, manholes, catch basins, storm drains, culverts, ditches, water and sewer facilities. Supervises and participates in the operation of light to medium equipment, dump trucks, large lawn mowers, jack hammers, air compressor and related tools and equipment. Assists a senior supervisor with overseeing large crews; discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instructions from supervisor; makes and adjusts work assignments. Performs or assists in performing the more difficult tasks; ensures crews are in conformance with department policy and safety regulations. Transports crew members to and from job sites; completes time sheets, project related worksheets and vehicle maintenance reports. Trains and instructs subordinates. Responds to emergency situations and organizes crew to take remedial action. Performs related tasks as required. High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in semiskilled maintenance, construction or utility work including some supervisory experience., or equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of municipal construction, maintenance and repair practices. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work. Ability to assign and supervise the work of others. Ability to prepare reports. Skill in the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. May require possession of or ability to obtain Grade II Collections or Grade B Distribution, confined spaces, and trenching and shoring certifications depending on departmental assignment. Possession of a valid driver's license in the state of North Carolina. Require possession of or the ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina. This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently sitting, speaking or hearing and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
