Job Description

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of procedures used in making routine and complex repairs to water mains, pipes, and appurtenances. Knowledge of methods of opening-closing streets and safety precautions relating thereto. Knowledge of varied types of tools used in construction, maintenance, and repair of water department installations, and varied uses of these tools. Knowledge of methods used in keeping routine records. Knowledge of the supervisory techniques. Ability to organize a working crew, give them assignments and instructions, assist them when difficult and unusual problems arise, and to check their work to see that proper procedures are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are observed, and that desired objectives are achieved. Ability to work harmoniously with others. Ability to work for long periods in emergency situations and remain on the job until repairs have been made. Ability to analyze problems involved in the construction, repair, and maintenance of water mains, pipes, valves, hydrants, and water gates, and to determine an effective method of solution. Ability to operate an air compressor and skillfully use other specialized tools and equipment, and to supervise the proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies. Ability to work harmoniously with associates and subordinates. Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods. Ability to plan and schedule water service maintenance and repair operations, and direct work processes. Ability to give suitable work assignments, instructions, and guidance to subordinate supervisors. Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports on the activities of the units. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
