) City of Buffalo - 3.9 Buffalo, NY Job Details Full-time $49,400 - $76,000 a year 3 days ago Qualifications Vendor relationship building Full Job Description JOB An incumbent to a position in this class oversees the operation, maintenance and repair activities of equipment and vehicles. He establishes and implements various repair preventive maintenance and state inspection programs. The Superintendent of Fleet Maintenance exercises considerable discretion in the planning and assigning of work activities within the framework of available personnel. The incumbent is responsible for drawing up specifications to acquire new equipment and vehicles in accordance with departmental guidelines. Immediate supervision is received from either the Commissioner of the department or employees in positions so designated by the department head. Supervision is exercised over Motor Equipment Mechanics and other personnel assigned to the repair shop.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Plans, supervises and is responsible for the maintenance and repair of motor equipment and vehicles including but not limited to trucks, tractors, hi-lifts, police vehicles, etc.; schedules work according to repairs and priorities; inspects work of subordinate personnel to ensure it meets established standards; Schedules preventive maintenance programs in accordance with dealer specifications or departmental policy; Schedules yearly NYS Inspections on equipment and vehicles; Prepares specifications for new equipment and vehicles; inspects and tests equipment to insure it meets standards; Requisitions materials and supplies needed in repairing equipment and vehicles including tools, testing equipment, etc.; maintains inventory of same; Instructs personnel on proper procedures for maintaining and repairing motor equipment; ensures accepted safety procedures are followed by personnel; Maintains accurate records and reports concerning vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair activities, i.e., work performed on vehicles, cost of materials used, time required to perform work; Maintains personnel records of employees assigned, i.e., hours worked, vacation time, sick leave time, personnel leave days; Develops and oversees the budget for fleet operations; Acts as a liaison between the department and Division of Inventory and Stores to ensure parts for vehicles and equipment are obtained in order to shorten down time; Performs related work in connection with the maintenance and repair activities and management of a repair shop.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques used in mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs on both gasoline and diesel-powered equipment; Thorough knowledge of repair shop management, including automotive economics and operation and maintenance of shop equipment; Ability to diagnose automotive mechanical difficulties and set priorities; Ability to prepare, understand and interpret specifications and mechanical drawings of equipment and vehicles; Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to establish good working relationships with vendors and contractors; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
