Job Description

Under direction, is responsible for supervising and participating in the installation and maintenance of water distribution lines, valves, and hydrants; performs related duties as required. (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) Supervises employees engaged in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution lines, valves, and hydrants, to include performance appraisals, and initiating disciplinary recommendations; Participates in all phases of water maintenance field work; Selects type, size of pipe, and related materials according to construction objectives; Drives commercial vehicles to transport materials and workers to worksite, loading materials on truck as needed; Leads inspections of vehicles, equipment and tools; Reads water atlases to locate water lines, mainline/meter boxes, and valves; Operates valves to start or interrupt water service; Identifies leaks and/or damage locations; Locates curb boxes using metal detectors and meters; Trains and ensures employees follow proper work and safety procedures, equipment usage, and operating procedures; Communicates work procedures to the general public; Notifies customers of water shut-off repairs; Prepares work logs, accident reports, and valve logs; Oversees the backhoe operator while digging to ensure utility line integrity; Oversees and participates in the restoration or replacement of areas removed during water line, valve, and hydrant repair/installation such as concrete sidewalks, brick walls, asphalt and concrete pavement, manholes, fences, trees, or other landscaping; Enters job-related data into the computerized maintenance management system, such as time accounting, type of repair, and materials used. Two (2) years of experience as a Water Maintenance Worker with the City of Columbus or comparable experience. Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver's license with an air brake endorsement.
COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT
The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be MERGED , according to score, with the names of applicants on the current eligible list. If you are interested in having your name included on the eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439. The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Supervision (open-book), Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Logic and Reasoning, Map Reading, Safety, Water Maintenance, Reading Atlases, and 2016/2019 Microsoft Outlook. The exam is expected to be administered in late July - early August 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time. All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
