Job Description
Assistant Golf Course Superintendent supports the Golf Course Superintendent in managing daily operations, turf care, staff supervision, and course maintenance to ensure optimal playing conditions.
Core Responsibilities Turf and Course Maintenance:
The Assistant Superintendent helps maintain greens, fairways, tees, bunkers, roughs, and landscape areas. This includes mowing, watering, fertilization, aeration, pest control, and scouting for turf diseases or insect issues, making recommendations for solutions as needed. They also monitor and operate irrigation systems, troubleshoot repairs, and maintain equipment to ensure optimal turf health.Staff Supervision and Training:
They assist in managing the grounds crew, scheduling daily operations, and providing training on safe equipment operation and proper maintenance techniques. They motivate and supervise staff, review performance, and assist with personnel matters such as evaluations, wage recommendations, and disciplinary actions.Safety and Compliance:
The Assistant Superintendent enforces safety standards, ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and oversees proper storage and application of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals. They also conduct safety training and orient new staff to their roles and responsibilities.Operational Support:
They help develop daily work schedules, coordinate maintenance activities, and assist with budget preparation and record-keeping, including logs for supplies, chemical applications, weather conditions, and staff timecards. In the absence of the Superintendent, they may assume full responsibility for the golf course operations.Construction and Renovation Projects:
The Assistant Superintendent may oversee or assist with construction, renovation, and repair projects on the golf course and related facilities, ensuring quality and adherence to design specifications.Professional Development:
They are expected to stay current with turfgrass management, course conditioning, agronomic practices, and new equipment technologies. Participation in seminars, reading industry materials, and playing golf to understand course conditions are encouraged.Member and Guest Relations:
They help promote player satisfaction by maintaining high-quality course conditions and responding professionally to feedback from members and guests. Qualifications and Skills Typically, an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent has experience in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field . Essential skills include leadership, problem-solving, knowledge of golf course operations, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Physical labor and hands-on experience with equipment are also important. This role is critical for ensuring the golf course remains in top condition, supporting both the Superintendent and the overall maintenance team in delivering a high-quality golfing experience.Pay:
