Job Description

Lead Sexton Arch Street United Methodist Church & The Center-Philadelphia Position Summary The Lead Sexton is responsible for the overall cleanliness, maintenance, safety, security, and day-to-day building operations of Arch Street United Methodist Church and The Center-Philadelphia facilities. This position provides direct supervision and coordination of the Sexton team, ensuring that the building and grounds are maintained in a welcoming, safe, and professional manner that supports worship, ministry, community programming, hospitality, and organizational operations. The Lead Sexton serves as a working supervisor, actively participating in custodial and maintenance responsibilities while overseeing the work schedules, assignments, and performance of two Sextons. The position requires flexibility, strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively with church staff, community partners, volunteers, and building users. This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Salary for this position is $45,000/annually. Arch Street UMC offers access to a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance. Arch Street UMC is a participant in the unemployment compensation insurance program. Arch Street UMC offers 4 weeks of paid vacation, 5 sick days, 4 flex days and 12 paid holidays per year for this position. Arch Street UMC offers 12 weeks of Paid Family Leave for qualifying events. Essential ResponsibilitiesFacilities Maintenance & Custodial Oversight Maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and presentation of all church and program spaces including offices, meeting rooms, hallways, restrooms, kitchens, worship areas, classrooms, and common areas. Perform routine custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trash removal, restroom sanitation, and supply replenishment. Monitor building conditions and identify maintenance, repair, and safety concerns. Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance tasks as appropriate. Coordinate with external contractors and vendors as directed. Ensure all facilities are prepared for worship services, meetings, events, and community programs. Assist with room setups, breakdowns, and furniture movement for events and ministry activities. Supervision & Team Coordination Supervise, schedule, and coordinate the work of two Sextons. Assign daily, weekly, and seasonal tasks to ensure effective building coverage and operational continuity. Provide training, guidance, and support to custodial staff. Monitor work quality, productivity, and adherence to safety and operational standards. Participate in performance management processes in collaboration with supervisors and organizational leadership. Foster a respectful, collaborative, and professional work environment. Building Safety & Security Open and secure facilities according to established schedules and operational needs. Monitor building access and ensure adherence to security procedures. Respond appropriately to emergencies, building issues, and urgent maintenance concerns. Ensure compliance with health, safety, and fire code requirements. Report accidents, incidents, damage, or unsafe conditions promptly. Hospitality & Community Support Help create a welcoming and hospitable environment for congregation members, guests, staff, tenants, volunteers, and community participants. Interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including vulnerable and marginalized populations served through the ministries of Arch Street UMC and The Center-Philadelphia. Support the mission and values of the organizations through professional and compassionate service. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain maintenance logs, supply inventories, and related records. Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding facility needs, scheduling issues, and operational concerns. Assist in developing and implementing custodial procedures and building operations practices. Qualifications Minimum of 3 years of custodial, facilities, or maintenance experience required. Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred. Working knowledge of custodial methods, cleaning equipment, and basic building maintenance practices. Ability to safely operate cleaning equipment and maintenance tools. Ability to lift, move, and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical labor including bending, climbing, standing, and walking for extended periods. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or special events as needed. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and respectful workplace boundaries. Work Environment This position operates in a church and community-service environment with frequent interaction with staff, volunteers, congregants, visitors, program participants, and external partners. The role requires regular physical activity and occasional response to urgent building or operational needs outside standard business hours. Reporting Relationship The Lead Sexton reports to the Building Manager of Arch Street United Methodist Church and The Center-Philadelphia.
