Position Summary Zachry Construction is seeking a Dirt Superintendent to oversee excavation and subgrade preparation operations on heavy civil construction projects. The Dirt Superintendent is responsible for meeting production goals by effectively managing multiple foremen, subcontractors, and equipment while maintaining safety and quality standards. This position works closely with project management and field teams to plan, coordinate, and execute earthwork activities efficiently and safely. What You'll Do Manage and direct multiple foremen, equipment, and subcontractors to meet production goals and ensure safe operations
Create and maintain plans and reports used to update project schedules
Develop detailed work plans and two-week schedule look-aheads
Set and achieve production goals that align with project objectives
Communicate safety, work plans, and schedules during weekly meetings
Understand plans and specifications thoroughly and provide training to foremen and crews
Continuously analyze operations and methods to identify safer and more efficient ways to perform tasks
Build and maintain effective relationships with owners, clients, managers, and team members
Ensure proper housekeeping and maintenance of work areas, trucks, and equipment
Review and interpret daily cost, monthly cost reports, and projections
Oversee and review daily reports and diaries for accuracy and completeness
Effectively manage crew assignments, equipment utilization, and other resources
Report injuries, damages, and incidents promptly; take proactive steps to prevent recurrence
Ensure compliance with company policies, SWPPP, and EPA regulations
Understand foremen responsibilities and support team leadership development
Recruit, interview, and hire qualified applicants for available positions; participate in employee development, promotions, and disciplinary actions as necessary This job summary is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this position. What We're Looking For A minimum of 3-5 years of heavy highway, road, and bridge construction experience required
Experience managing medium to large heavy highway, road, and bridge projects ($10M+) required
Experience with Mobile Timecard preferred
Must be capable, licensed, and approved to drive a company vehicle to work sites, offices, and other locations as needed
Knowledge and experience working around existing utilities and performing utility locates
Strong understanding of soil mechanics and materials
Knowledge of load charts and rigging, with the ability to identify changes in scope
Survey experience and familiarity with GPS and robotic systems
Effective understanding and utilization of earthwork equipment, with the ability to train operators
Experience with cement and lime stabilization processes
Ability to design and implement positive drainage plans for project sites
Understanding of dirt flow and mass haul on large-scale projects
Strong leadership and team management skills
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities; detail-oriented
Proficient in Microsoft programs such as Excel and Word
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
