Job Description

LEADSPERSON - METER MAINTENANCE
  • Leadperson - Meter Maintenance
JOB SUMMARY
The incumbent, under the guidance of the Supervisor, Meter Maintenance, installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs water meters. Assist in water quality monitoring in shutdowns to protect public health. Communicates with commercial, industrial, and residential customers to explain scope of work. Makes sure the job is completed correctly and maintains a safe work site at all times. Provide excellent customer service in all aspects of job.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Note:
All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.
  • Install large industrial, commercial, and smaller residential meters.
  • Install fire hydrant meters to prevent cross contamination of water supply.
  • Skill in providing verbal instructions and physical demonstrations of tasks to be performed.
  • Oversee crew on the job site to meet all job and safety standards.
  • Restore job site to original state.
  • Install, repair, diagnose and repair ERT's with use of Itron software.
  • Assess safety of job site and take appropriate action.
  • Check leaks called in by customers both during and after hours to determine need of repair.
  • Maintain equipment in good working order.
  • Knowledge of and skill in preforming of employees supervised.
  • Ensure the truck is stocked with everything necessary to complete a job.
  • Read meter routes when necessary.
  • Maintain good relationships with commercial & residential customers.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • Locate water lines in field as needed to prevent damages and loss of services.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year experience working in utilities field with Construction and Job Safety skills required.
  • Must have a Class IV Water Distribution License as issued by the State of Arkansas, or be able to obtain License within two (2) years of being placed in the position.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • All special skills may be acquired on the job.
  • May consider any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department.
  • Knowledge of clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, spreadsheets, managing files and records, keyboarding, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
POSITION DESIGNATIONS
This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely. This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties. This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally stand, walk, talk and hear. Frequently sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel and climb or balance. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel crouch or crawl. The employee is also required to use the sense of smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also necessary. The employee is occasionally required to list more than 100 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, works near moving mechanical parts and is at risk of electrical shock and vibration. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud.
