Job Description

Utility Worker I City of Mayflower, AR Government The Utility Worker I performs entry‑level skilled and semi‑skilled labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the city's water distribution system. This position supports daily operations of Mayflower Waterworks and ensures safe, reliable, and efficient water service for the community. Work is performed under general supervision with opportunities for training and advancement.

Hourly Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, and meters.
  • Perform manual labor such as digging trenches, shoveling, lifting materials, and operating hand tools.
  • Read, replace, install, and maintain water meters; assist with meter re‑reads and leak checks.
  • Locate, identify, and repair water leaks; assist with line flushing and hydrant maintenance.
  • Operate light equipment such as tapping tools, pipe cutters, compactors, and other utility equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and system asset information.
  • Respond to customer service requests, including low pressure calls, meter issues, and work orders.
  • Assist with utility line locates in compliance with Arkansas One‑Call (811) requirements.
  • Maintain cleanliness of vehicles, equipment, and Waterworks facilities.
  • Participate in after‑hours emergency callouts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Adhere to all city, state, and federal safety regulations, including confined space, traffic control, and PPE requirements.
  • Assists with water line tapping, chlorination procedures, and bacteriological sampling. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in water utilities, construction, plumbing, or related fields preferred but not required.
  • Ability to obtain required certifications within established timeframes. o Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and remain eligible for random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with City of Mayflower policies and federal/state regulations. Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid Arkansas Class D driver's license required.
  • Must be able to obtain the Arkansas Water Distribution Operator Grade I license within 1 year (training provided). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in water utility work.
  • Ability to read maps, drawings, and utility system layouts.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Basic understanding of safety practices related to excavation, traffic control, and equipment operation. Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, lift, bend, crouch, crawl, and carry heavy objects (50+ lbs).
  • Work involves exposure to dirt, water, uneven terrain, loud noise, and outdoor elements.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment safely. Work Environment
  • Performs work outdoors in varying weather conditions year‑round.
  • Exposure to water system hazards, moving equipment, traffic, and confined spaces.
  • May require shift work, overtime, and emergency response availability.
