Job Description

Position SummaryThe 811 Utility Locator is responsible for locating and marking underground utility lines in response to Miss Utility / 811 locate requests throughout Central Delaware and Southern Maryland. This role helps prevent utility damages, service interruptions, and safety hazards by accurately identifying and marking buried facilities before excavation begins.

Locators work independently in the field using utility locating equipment, mapping systems, and electronic ticket management software while maintaining strong communication with contractors, municipalities, and utility owners.

Key ResponsibilitiesUtility Locating & MarkingRespond to 811 locate requests within required state deadlinesLocate underground utilities including:

ElectricGasCommunications/FiberWaterSewerCATVMark utilities according to APWA color code standardsRead and interpret utility maps, prints, and GIS dataVerify clear and accurate markings before closing ticketsField OperationsDrive assigned company vehicle throughout service territoryWork outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditionsUse locating equipment such as:

Electromagnetic locatorsGround penetrating equipmentGPS/GIS systemsTablets/mobile ticket systemsMaintain daily productivity and quality standardsDocumentation & ReportingComplete ticket documentation accurately and on timeUpload photos and notes for completed locatesReport damaged utilities, unsafe conditions, and mapping discrepanciesMaintain compliance with Delaware and Maryland 811 regulationsCustomer & Contractor InteractionCommunicate professionally with excavators and property ownersExplain markings and locate limitations when neededCoordinate meet tickets and emergency requestsRepresent On The Mark Locators professionally in the fieldCoverage AreaCentral DelawareSouthern MarylandRural, residential, commercial, and highway environmentsTravel throughout assigned territory is required daily.
