Job Description
The HVAC Supervisor oversees the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across tribal housing facilities. This role ensures all HVAC operations meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards while leading a team of technicians and coordinating with the departments programs to support the community's needs. Lead and manage a team by prioritizing and assigning work, guiding, and mentoring staff, assisting with performance evaluations, ensuring training and adherence to policies and procedures, maintaining a healthy and safe work environment, and making recommendations to management to support optimal performance and productivity; Set clear goals and objectives aligned with organizational priorities; Ensure compliance with state and county safety codes for the inspection, repair, installation HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes; Develop and monitor the regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs; service and repair evaporative coolers; Coordinate with vendors for parts, equipment, and service contracts; Collaborate with Housing leadership on project planning and budgeting; Troubleshoot HVAC systems and diagnose problems with equipment; Read blue prints, schematics, and use energy management software for the installation or modification of HVAC systems; Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves; Respond to emergency HVAC issues and ensure timely resolution; Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members. Perform skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors and wiring systems as needed; connect motors to control panels; Lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment Install and calibrate systems; install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary; test joints, and insulate pipes of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; descale tubing; rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps; Maintain related records concerning time, labor, and materials; maintain log of tasks performed and write reports as required; Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by manager or director.
Knowledge of:
Standard practice of the HVAC and refrigeration trade; Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems; Applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations of State and local authoritiespertaining to HVAC, refrigeration; Ability to assign tasks, coordinate team efforts, and motivate staff; Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with staff, clients, and leadership; Health and safety regulations; Knowledge of goal-setting, evaluation metrics, and departmental planning; Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.Skills and Abilities:
Perform skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of District heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities; Diagnose defects, and install, repair and maintain heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air-conditioning units; Meet schedules and time lines; Critical thinking to resolve conflicts, analyze data, and make informed decisions; Mentor and coach employees for career growth and succession planning; Maintain routine records and prepare reports; Identify skill gaps and coordinate training programs to enhance team capabilities; Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate plus three (3) years of documentable HVAC Journeyman level operation, maintenance, and repair experience and at least two (2) years in a leadership role overseeing HVAC Technicians or maintenance teams; or, any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. AND Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred; Experience with trenchers, cement mixers, forklifts or other heavy equipment used in HVAC installation is preferred.Special Requirements:
State of Arizona Type III Certification required; Universal CFC License is required within six (6) months of the date of hire; Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends; Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain one within ninety (90) days of hire.
