Ice Merchandiser Refrigeration Field Technician Reddy Ice Manufacturing & Distribution Charleston, SC Job Details $24 - $26 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Safe work practices Computer operation Customer communication Computer literacy English Mobile devices Full Job Description Role Overview You keep Reddy Ice's merchandisers running at their best so customers always have perfectly chilled ice on demand. Your day blends hands-on refrigeration work with a continuous improvement mindset—using lean tools (VSM, Kaizen, A3) to spot waste, streamline tasks, and elevate service quality. You model our True North attributes every day: voice of the customer, respect for the individual, direct and fact-based communication, servant leadership, and relentless improvement. A Day in the Life You start with a route on your handheld, head to a retail store to diagnose a merchandiser that isn't cooling, and quickly restore performance. Midday, you install a replacement unit at another customer site, then swing by a refurbishment center to help prep equipment. You check your service vehicle, reconcile spare parts, and flag restock needs. Before day's end, you join a short Kaizen huddle to capture SOP improvement ideas, then connect with peers via video call to share maintenance best practices—all while delivering courteous, safety-first service on the road and on site. What You'll Take On Troubleshoot and repair ice merchandisers through scheduled service calls and urgent requests. Install, swap, and remove merchandisers at customer locations. Perform preventive maintenance and detailed cleanings to maximize uptime. Work at customer sites, Reddy Ice plants and DCs, and in refurbishment centers. Participate in company-sponsored technician training; proactively build new trade skills. Keep your vehicle, tools, and test equipment in top condition; manage on-truck parts and request replenishment when needed. Champion a customer-centric culture with respectful, consistent communication and outstanding service. Share SOP enhancement opportunities with the Field Equipment Service Manager; contribute to peer discussions via video, calls, and other platforms. Demonstrate professionalism at all times—safe driving, proper uniform, punctual starts, prompt incident reporting, and strict compliance with Policies, Programs & Procedures. Collaborate in a team environment and assist others as needed. Take on additional responsibilities assigned by management. Uphold our Code of Business Ethics—honesty and integrity are non-negotiable. Lead with safety; it's personal for every one of us. Lean & Continuous Improvement Use VSM, Kaizen, and A3 problem-solving to identify opportunities and drive process improvements; lead and participate in Kaizen events and value stream mapping to create measurable value for customers, employees, and shareholders. Essential Cognitive & Safety-Related Capabilities Read and interpret English documentation (safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, procedures). Work continuously alert and focused, with sound judgment and safe habits. Maintain stamina and avoid fatigue on the job. Estimate time and distance accurately. Retain and recall short-term instructions quickly. Concentrate on tasks requiring high cognitive function. Adapt rapidly to changing conditions, emergencies, or alarms. Demonstrate genuine care and commitment to safety. Respond quickly with coordinated reflexes to operational stimuli. Remain free from mental/physical impairment that could affect safe, competent performance. React promptly and appropriately to evolving operating conditions. Reporting Structure No supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications EPA Type I or Universal refrigeration certification (required). No prior experience required; experience in refrigeration, HVAC, electrical, or similar install/repair work is a plus. Valid operator/Class C driver's license with acceptable MVR; occasional use of a company vehicle. Score 80% or higher on all internal Tech 1 training assessments. High school diploma, refrigeration trade school certificate, or equivalent experience. Basic computer and handheld proficiency; follow reporting SOPs on a handheld device. Work Environment & Physical Demands Minimal travel with possible overnights. Weekends, nights, and holidays are part of the schedule; overtime may be required. Frequent work in retail stores with regular driving between stores and plant locations. Lift up to 60 lbs; use installation lift equipment; climb ladders; operate power tools. Fast-paced, rapidly changing environment—requires stress management, collaboration, and sound reasoning.
