Service Technician Job Description The Service Technician inspects, tests, repairs, and maintains gas appliances, equipment, and associated systems at customer locations. This role diagnoses issues using specialized tools, performs both routine and emergency service work, and ensures all tasks meet safety, regulatory, and company standards. The Service Technician also provides customer guidance on proper equipment operation, completes necessary documentation, and may perform related duties such as driving service vehicles, delivering cylinders, and supporting other field functions as needed. Responsibilities Inspect and test appliances, equipment, and associated gas systems at customer premises to identify operating conditions and potential issues. Check high-pressure gas service for dust, water, or blockages and determine appropriate corrective actions. Use human senses, leak-detecting solutions, and gas detection or measurement equipment such as leak detectors, manometers, and pressure gauges to locate and diagnose problems. Perform repairs by cleaning, adjusting, repairing, changing, or replacing burners, pilot lights, controls, flues, gas cocks, valves, house and appliance regulators, meters, and other components or electronic devices related to appliance and system operation. Verify that all repairs and adjustments have corrected the problem using leak-detecting solutions and gas detection or measurement equipment. Essential Skills At least four years of successful and progressive experience in the trade, including a minimum of two years as a Service Technician III or equivalent, or comparable experience demonstrating the ability to perform Service Technician II duties. Demonstrated ability to effectively install, repair, test, and adjust gas appliances, equipment, and systems. Proven record of dealing tactfully and courteously with customers in a field service environment. Strong working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures. Solid understanding of relevant codes, including NFPA #58 and NFPA #59, and applicable regulations, standards, and safety rules, regulations, and practices. High proficiency in the proper use of tools, materials, and equipment associated with gas appliance and system service. Good safety record and consistent adherence to safe work practices. Additional Skills & Qualifications Completion of all required Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal and State courses or programs related to the role. Completion of required OSHA Federal and State safety courses or programs. Completion of applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) courses or programs. Ability and commitment to maintain at least minimum passing scores for all recurring Federal, State, and NFPA courses or programs as required by regulations. Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Hazardous Materials endorsement. Work Environment This role is field-based and involves working at customer premises, in and around appliances, equipment, and associated systems. You will regularly drive and operate a service truck and may also operate other vehicles such as tank trucks or cylinder delivery vehicles when needed. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and active emergency scenes such as gas leaks, fires, or damaged piping. You will use specialized tools and equipment including leak detectors, manometers, pressure gauges, and standard mechanical and electrical service tools, as well as computer systems for reporting and data entry. The position follows structured safety protocols, EH&S standards, and industry codes, requiring consistent use of appropriate protective equipment and adherence to safe work practices. Hours may vary based on service demands and emergency response needs, and the role may require standing by at emergency sites until relieved by appropriate personnel.
